The Goonies and Gremlins screenwriter Chris Columbus recently offered brief updates on the current status of two sequels we’ve been hearing about for many years now, Gremlins 3 and The Goonies 2.
While things aren’t looking great for a Goonies sequel at the moment, Columbus confirmed that he and his production company 1492 Pictures are “actively talking” about a new Gremlins movie.
Technically, Gremlins 3 isn’t happening for sure just yet. But it is something that’s been in development for a while now. At least some form of it, anyway, whether that be a new sequel or a remake.
The script is written by original screenwriter Chris Columbus, who also penned The Goonies and would go on to direct Adventures in Babysitting, Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He recently talked about the sequel, its “twisted and dark” tone, and whether it will use CGI or practical effects.
Amidst all of these reboots and remakes and sequels, it is pretty surprising that we’ve not yet seen Gremlins 3 find life. We’ve heard about a new movie in the franchise in the past—sometimes as a remake, sometimes as a sequel—but nothing has ever come of it.
Thankfully Zach Galligan, who starred in the first two Gremlins movies, is keeping us updated on where things stand. Continue below to read what he had to say.
The long-developing third Gremlins film was rumored to be a reboot, and as you can imagine, this didn’t sit well with any of the fans of the franchise. Despite these rumors, actor Zach Galligan says that it won’t be a reboot or a remake, but an actual sequel. And you might have Chris Columbus for keeping the franchise close to his chest and the huge success of Jurassic World to thank for that.
It’s official, that Gremlins remake is officially happening. Warner Bros has just tapped Goosebumps writer Carl Ellsworth (The Last House on the Left, Red Dawn) to pen the script for the remake. Chris Columbus, who wrote the original film, will help produce the remake alongside Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the original film.
A few months back there was thought that the film was dead in its tracks. However, the recent hirings indicate that the film is back on. Hit the jump for more.
