Thor Writer To Pen ‘He-Man and The Masters Of The Universe’ Script
  |  @   |

Big screen adaptations of cartoon nostalgia aren’t completely out of the norm these days, Transformers being one of the most popular ones having four films already released, with a fifth and spinoffs on the way. Now, another animated series is being turned into a live-action film, although this one is more of a reboot of the original live-action film.

Sony has been developing He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, a reboot of Masters of the Universe, the 1987 live-action film, which was based on the popular 1980’s He-Man animated series. After going through a number of writers and directors, the studio has finally settled on a writer. According to a new report, Thor screenwriter Christopher Yost has been tapped to pen the script. More on this story below.

The Art of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is, at its core, a love letter to the best toy franchise in the history of the world. Yes, I am a HUGE He-Man fan, and yes, I’m biased. But, at the very least, you have to respect a toy line that didn’t come from another medium, took on a life of it’s own, and made literally BILLIONS of dollars for the Mattel toy company and has continued on, in one form or another, to this very day.

‘Masters Of The Universe’: Rian Johnson, Joe Cornish On Rumored Shortlist To Direct
  |

Sony Pictures’ long-in-development live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe recently lost its latest director when Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), who had signed on to the project in the summer of 2012, departed to make the next G.I. Joe sequel. Back in October Pirates of the Caribbean and The Mask of Zorro co-writer Terry Rossio was hired to pen a new draft after a previous effort by Alex Litvak (Predators) and Mike Finch didn’t pass muster with the studio.

This reboot is apparently of great importance to the franchise-famished Sony because they have put together a list of potential directors to take over for Chu, and if this list is genuine, then Masters of the Universe could turn out to be pretty damn great after all.

Remembering Lou Scheimer, Animation Pioneer & Producer Of ‘Star Trek,’ ‘He-Man’ Animated Series
  |

Animation mogul Lou Scheimer died a few days ago at the age of 84. For most people, even rabid fans of the man’s work, his name remains pretty much unknown. In fact, for the most part, his death was pretty much under the radar, which is a bonafide shame.

Lou Scheimer was one of the original founders (along with Hal Sutherland and Norm Prescott) of Filmation, which for most children of the 1970s like me, saw as an absolute assembly line of Saturday Morning Cartoons, Fat Albert, cartoon adaptations of the Archie comics series, and the original Star Trek Animated Series (which almost had the entire original NBC-TV show cast voicing the characters) among them. For a generation weaned as youth in the 1980s, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe was the order of the day. Lou Scheimer was an executive producer on these aforementioned shows, and there’s a certain pop culture chill one gets when remembering seeing these programs as a child, accented by the instantly recognizable rotating circle logo, which was the Filmation visual brand.
