As much as we would like to see the Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy franchise to continue on with Ron Perlman, Lionsgate’s reboot is steering it in a new direction. And with every reboot must come a new cast. Stranger Things star David Harbour will play the title character, with director Neil Marshall (The Descent) taking the new iteration towards a hard-R. This follows a recent string of hit comic book adaptation that have been geared towards a more mature audience. But we didn’t know what Big Red would look like or at least how he would distinguish himself from the first take.
Now that has changed, with the film posting the first look at Harbour as Hellboy on social media. And not a teaser, either. A full body look at the character, one gigantic arm, shaved off horns, gun, and all. Check it out below.
Last month Deadpool star Ed Skrein decided to walk away from the upcoming Hellboy reboot after backlash over his being cast to play Major Ben Daimio, a Japanese-American character.
Now comes word that a new actor has been chosen for the role. Daniel Dae Kim, best known for his roles in LOST and Hawaii Five-O, has entered into negotiations for the role.
Actor Ed Skrein is taking himself out of the Hellboy reboot, citing the outcry of whitewashing when he was initially cast as a non-white role from the comic book. That role is Major Ben Daimio, a character who happens to be Japanese. His move is practically unheard of, especially since we’ve been seeing a huge increase in whitewashing in films like Ghost In The Shell, Doctor Strange, Death Note, and much more. When the casting was initially announced, the backlash was swift with many decrying it.
But the Deadpool and Game of Thrones actor believed that “representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voice in the Arts.” More on what he had to say and the importance of representation here below.
The Hellboy reboot has found its Blood Queen. It’s being reported that Milla Jovovich is in final talks to take on the role. The movie was originally said to be titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, but it appears now that they may not be using that subtitle anymore.
Jovovich joins Stranger Things star David Harbour and Deadwood and American Gods star Ian McShane on the cast.
