The Stooges

Iggy and the Stooges, one of the very first pre-punk bands whose ferocious energy has created some of the genre’s most landmark records of all-time and led by the master of disaster Iggy Pop, has just finished recording an album of all new material, the long-awaited follow-up to their 2007 album The Weirdness.

The forthcoming new release is entitled Ready To Die, and is reportedly described by the album’s engineer Ed Cherney as sounding and having the attitude of the “old-time Stooges” and that ultimately the album is “raw, with great songs, not necessarily big choruses,” gushing that on Ready To Die, the band has produced “the anti-Christ of anthems.”

$5 MP3 Album Deal: The Stooges ‘Raw Power’

Raw Power

Raw Power by The Stooges, one of the prototype records for punk music, with its snarling and frighteningly rough aural attitudes, is now available on MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $5.

The Stooges had already released two albums prior to 1973’s Raw Power, (The Stooges and Funhouse), each also dazzlingly original and sonically foreboding and ominous, lean and tough, like a bottle slash across the face, elements which became fully realized by the time Raw Power was released. Produced originally by David Bowie and led by the pint-sized man full of moxie Iggy Pop and with the sonic rumblings and grumblings of guitarist James Williamson and the rhythm section of former guitar player Ron Asheton moved over to bass and his brother Scotty still playing the drums as he always had, Raw Power finds the quartet taking Thor-style hammers in a musical sense to glass and then picking up the shards and handing them over to Iggy who proceeds to self-mutilate himself by way of his full admission and vocal nakedness on the record. He offers no apologies and takes no prisoners; he stands alone on his fucked up summit and that’s just the way he likes it.

As a few of our regular readers have probably figured out by now, I have been going through a bit of a Star Trek kick as of late; and with all incarnations of the television shows available for instant streaming on Netflix, it’s a prime opportunity to become reacquainted with the final frontier. And so for this week’s review, I decided to dive into Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

And yet, there are many fans who seem to consider DS9 to be the ginger stepchild left under the stairs.

I prefer to consider it SPECIAL.

…as in EXTRA SPECIAL COOL, yo.

Conceivably one of the most divisive series among fans, Deep Space Nine has been considered to be the best of the Star Treks by many fans, and yet the worse by many others. This is because DS9 takes a completely different perspective, perhaps even a bold one, by Star Trek standards: it stays fairly much in the one location.

Record Store Day 2012

Today is Record Store Day, an international observance that takes place on the third Saturday in April each year. The event is meant to put a spotlight on music, as well as independent record store owners, and each year, there’s tons of special vinyl releases.

Below is a list of all the special vinyl releases for today, from artists like Iggy Pop David Bowie, T-Rex, The Beatles, Cradle of Filth, Deep Purple, Sex Pistols, Metallica, and The Clash. (Ok, those are the artists I like, but there’s also Bruno Mars, Ryan Adams, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, and a bunch of other bands/artists I’ve never heard of.)
