Treasure Planet Blu-ray coverNovember 27, 2002. That was the day the greatly overlooked and underappreciated Treasure Planet launched into theatres, without much fanfare. Mixed critical reviews certainly did not help encourage moviegoers to head into cinemas to see Disney’s latest action-adventure flick, as opposed to the highly-popular Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. As a result, the big-budget animated film flopped at the box office, sinking the company’s efforts at exploring the sci-fi space genre. Well, until John Carter premiered, and we all know how that turned out. After ten years, Disney is breathing new life into the cult fantasy favorite by releasing Treasure Planet on Blu-ray. Will this generate the attention of new fans to check out the studio’s 43rd animated feature? Let’s hope so.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt energizes Jim Hawkins, the rebellious teenage protagonist, with boyish spirit and angst. Hawkins’ carefree existence of solar sailing on his home planet closes when a monster-like pilot’s spaceship crashes near his family’s inn, leaving behind a map of the legendary Treasure Planet. All of those daring stories of pirates and cyborgs Jim read about as a boy were real, and he and his mom’s persnickety friend, Dr. Doppler (the perfectly-cast David Hyde Pierce) set off to charter a mission to find that “Loot of a Thousand Worlds.”

The Dark Knight Rises

A few days ago we got our first look at the cover art and track listing for the forthcoming release of Hans Zimmer‘s orchestral soundtrack to The Dark Knight Rises was released.

Today we have for you a selection of 30-second samples from each of the album’s fifteen tracks. You can listen to them here below.

The chilling chant that serves as the theme for the film’s villain Bane (Tom Hardy) is quite prevalent in several of these tracks, but in the final track “Rise” there is a subtle callback to a piece used to underscore the death of Bruce Wayne’s (Christian Bale) parents in the early moments of Batman Begins. A hint of rumors to come true, perhaps?

The Dark Knight Rises

Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy draws to a close next month with the much-anticipated release of The Dark Knight Rises. One of the most crucial and defining elements of the series has been the musical scores composed by Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. For the score to The Dark Knight Rises Zimmer will be flying solo for the first time, but if you remember his stellar score to Nolan’s 2010 mind-bending blockbuster Inception, you just might be perfectly fine with that.

I’m anxious to hear what Zimmer has in store for Nolan’s final journey to Gotham City. With the movie guaranteed to be a sweeping action epic with great intellectual and emotional themes running through its narrative, the noted composer will have a lot of musical ground to cover. Jett at Batman-On-Film has revealed the track listing for the upcoming release of the soundtrack, which is available for pre-order now, and posted the album cover art as well.

You can check them both out here below.

Despite seemingly moving forward swimmingly, behind the scenes, the music side of the impending Hunger Games feature film appears to be a bit more troubled.

Variety is reporting that James Newton Howard will be taking over scoring duties on the film from composer Danny Elfman. Elfman was originally slated to team with T. Bone Burnett [odd as hell], but due to scheduling issues, that has now officially changed.

For a while now, Danny Elfman has been attached to compose the musical score for Michel Gondry‘s upcoming crime fighting action-comedy The Green Hornet, but it looks like a last-minute change is unfolding.

The Playlist is reporting that they’re sources are saying that Elfman is now out due to simply having too many other projects on his plate. They’re also hearing that the man currently in talks to replace him is James Newton Howard, who also happens to be handling the score for Green Lantern as well. Fancy that.
