Streaming Review: Creepshow Episode 6 – Skincrawlers/By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain

Happy Halloween, everyone! Once trick or treating is over, lay back on the couch with a huge bag of candy and watch the Season 1 finale of Creepshow on Shudder. The hit series from executive producer Greg Nicotero was just renewed for a second season and ends its first season 6-episode run on AMC’s horror and supernatural streaming service. The finale ends an already strong season with a double banger of monster goodness, with “Skincrawlers” and “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain.” The latter was directed by make-up effects guru Tom Savini, who helped Nicotero break into the horror business years ago and who worked on the original 1982 film from George A. Romero and Stephen King.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Sweet Dreams Cthulhu By Jason Ciaramella
  |  @   |

I was introduced to Cthulhu back in the early to mid 90s when a friend in junior high turned me onto Metallica, and soon I heard their amazing instrumental “Call of Ktulu” on their Ride the Lightning album. I was big into reading lyrics back then, and when I got to Metallica’s next album, Master of Puppets and I heard The Thing That Should Not Be, a section of the lyrics stuck with me. Years later in college I took a Horror Films and Fiction class and read H.P. Lovecraft’s short story, Call of Cthulhu and suddenly it all came together. My borderline obsession with Lovecraftian horror and Cthulhu has spilled over to me young daughter. A few years ago I picked up a copy of C is for Cthulhu at New York Comic Con, and the rest was history.

Now the creators of that book, Jason Ciaramella and Greg Murphy, are back with the follow-up, Sweet Dreams Cthulhu, which they are raising for on Kickstarter.

As a country we are basically supportive of our troops, usually believing them to be acting in our best interests. Unfortunately, sometimes those same soldiers make poor decisions that haunt them to the end of their days. Thumbprint #1 sets up a story that is much like that, all centered around a soldier who made some choices with which she is trying to learn to live.

Private First Class Mallory Grennan is newly arrived back in the United States after serving abroad, arriving home only to find her father has just recently died. She quickly realizes that she is still living in his shadow even after his death. Working at the local VFW bar, his old friends are constantly reminding her of what a great man he was, a medic and a hero. Purple Heart, Silver Star…he really embodied what it meant to be a proper soldier. Unfortunately, sometimes the apple falls far from the tree.
