With Journey 2: The Mysterious Island having brought in over $272 million worldwide thus far, New Line Cinema is moving forward with Journey 3.
Not only that, but the studio has entered into negotiations with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to return for the third installment. Johnson took over the franchise in Journey 2 after Brendan Fraser starred in the first movie, 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.
It’s hard to argue when expectations are lived up to, no matter how low.
The first trailer for the upcoming sequel Journey 2: The Mysterious Island has hit, and it looks like utter garbage. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Josh Hutcherson, and follows the story of an adventurer who teams with his stepfather to hunt down his grandfather, who himself is lost on a mysterious island. See, it all comes together.
Just recently we found out that Dwayne Johnson would be replacing Brendan Fraser in the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, currently being called Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
Johnson will be playing the boyfriend of returning star Josh Hutcherson‘s mother, who accompanies the young explorer on his journey to a mysterious island to find his missing grandfather…a grandfather who at the time was not yet cast. Today that has changed. We now know who will be joining the cast to play this missing grandfather, and that man is Sir Michael Caine.
2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth was one of the first to fuel the building 3D firestorm, and went on to pull in $241.9 million to its $60 million budget. Since then, a sequel, now titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, has been always planned, and things are starting to get moving forward…without previous star Brendan Fraser.
Fraser apparently couldn’t return due to scheduling conflicts, so New Line Cinema has gone out and signed Dwayne Johnson — previously known as “The Rock” from his wrestling days — to take his place in the lead. Johnson will play the boyfriend of returning star Josh Hutcherson‘s mother in the movie, who joins Hutcherson on an expedition to a wondrous island to try and find his missing grandfather.
