The Jungle Book Image

You didn’t think the wave of new versions of your favorite animated fairy tales and children’s stories was over already, did you? We still have a live-action Cinderella on the way, and the new take on Sleeping Beauty titled Maleficent. We’ve heard about possible darker new takes on Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. We can expect to see more Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, and Wizard of Oz soon, as well.

Now comes word of another live-action reboot. Disney is developing a new adaptation of The Jungle Book, the classic Rudyard Kipling collection of tales, many of which focus on a young boy named Mowgli who was raised by wolves and hangs out with anthropomorphic animals, such as a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera.

He-Man

Fans of He-Man have not been thrilled with the way things have gone in trying to make a new movie based on the powerful prince hero these past few years. Nevertheless, studios keep on trying, and Columbia Pictures has hired Mike Finch and Alex Litvak to write a shiny new script for Masters of the Universe.

A new, re-envisioned take on the He-Man character using modern filmmaking technologies has been floating in purgatory for quite a while now. At one point we even had a script that was getting great feedback and being compared to The Lord of the Rings as well as Kung-Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson set to captain the movie, but alas, even that was killed, revived, and killed again within the gears of the Hollywood machine.

Hack/Slash

Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Stephen Susco (The Grudge) has been hired to write the script for Hack/Slash, the upcoming movie based on the Tim Seeley comic book. Back in April of 2008, the project had Justin Marks writing the script that was to be directed by Todd Lincoln. Lincoln was also replaced back in July when Fredrik Bond was brought in to helm the movie (Read: “˜Hack/Slash’ Gets A New Director In Fredrik Bond)

Hack/Slash follows Cassie Hack, a girl who never had it easy growing up. When her evil Lunch Lady mother — who was murdered after it was discovered that she had been killing children and processing them into the food — comes back from the dead and resumes her murderous habits, Cassie takes her own mother out. After that, she begins her life as a slayer of Slashers, the vicious living and dead beings who walk the Earth, slaughtering all who cross their paths. She is joined by a giant named Vlad who acts as her bodyguard and strength.

He-Man

For the second time in the last year or so, Warner Brothers recently killed off their planned new live-action He-Man movie, which was preferably called Greyskull for a while, and then back to Masters of the Universe. Both moves came as a surprise as, even though it is He-Man, a review of the Justin Marks script by Latino Review claimed that it had a ton of potential and a real Lord of the Rings vibe to it. The reasoning behind Warner Bros. ultimately dispatching the classic property? It looks as if the studio and the creative sides of the project just could not see eye to eye, and decided it would be best to drop it and move on.

Now comes word that Columbia Pictures didn’t wait too long to go right after the property, and at last notice, they are in negotiations to acquire it. If this deal does move through without a hitch, though, there’s a good chance it could come with a price those of you looking forward to the project won’t swallow easily.
