Unlike the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the X-Men ensembles have been pretty straightforward comic book flicks. The Wolverine and Logan had their own sub-genres while Deadpool was a comedic superhero film. Now The New Mutants, another spinoff, will take on a genre that’s never been seen in any of the X-Men films or spinoffs. Director Josh Boone says it will be a “full-fledged horror movie,” and that they are trying to do something much different.
Also, Rosario Dawson is in talks to have a leadership role in the film. More on these two stories below.
If the X-Men film franchise had one problem, it’s that it cannot close out a trilogy. Rebooting has proven to be what the franchise needs to be reinvigorated and draw new audiences in. And spinoffs like Wolverine and Deadpool have also shown us that X-Men properties with mature content can be successful. But now it’s time for a new class of mutants to grace the big screen.
With New Mutants currently in development and scheduled for an April 2018 release, the film has started casting key roles. The first two to join are The Witch and Split‘s Anya Taylor-Joy and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams. More on the story below.
While the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse and next entry in the Wolverine series could possibly be the end of Bryan Singer’s two-part run with the franchise, that doesn’t mean you can expect the X-Men movies to slow down or take a break.
It’s been announced that a new spinoff of the franchise is on the way titled The New Mutants, and just as it sounds, the movie will introduce a whole new lineup of mutant characters. Fox has also hired a someone to make the movie, bringing in The Fault in Our Stars and Stuck in Love director Josh Boone to helm the project. Boone will also pen the screenplay along with Knate Gwaltney, with Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner producing.
