It wasn’t too long ago that we saw a couple of other Lady Death Kickstarters (Damnation Game and Chaos Rules) from creator Brian Pulido. I backed them both and was more than happy to do it again, it is Lady Death after all! As with his other fundraisers, Pulido sets realistic goals and puts together some amazing rewards.
Read on to find out more about Pulido’s new graphic novel Lady Death: Extinction Express, his latest venture into the world (or is that underworld) of Lady Death, and to watch the official Kickstarter video!
Guess who’s back?! Quickly following up on the success of his former Kickstarter campaign (seen here), Brian Pulido is ready to publish another Lady Death graphic novel! And not only is Pulido’s new graphic novel, Lady Death: Damnation Game already funded, but it’s quickly outpacing the last one. It’s an amazing time in the comic industry when any one of us can be directly involved in helping creators get their projects printed! The fact that it’s Lady Death doesn’t hurt at all.
When Brian Pulido contacted me, I was over the top excited. When he agreed to answer some questions for this Kickstarter Spotlight I almost literally jumped up and down with glee! I have been a fan of his Chaos! Comics characters since the nineties and it is nice to see him back in action with his iconic anti-heroine. As one of the original “bad girls” of the comics from her era, Lady Death has enjoyed widespread fame over the last two decades. But enough of the history, let’s talk about the current fundraising campaign!
There are a lot of folks out there trying to raise funds for their creator-owned comics. Hell, I’ve written about a lot of them for this column. Most of the time, it’s a new(ish) concept or character from a creator that no one has heard of before, because let’s face it…it’s tough to get noticed in today’s comics market. But every once in a blue moon, a well-known writer or artist puts something out there that they want to expose to the world at large, and Lady Death: Chaos Rules! is precisely that. It’s a Kickstarter campaign that’s ready to take on the world!
The brainchild of Brian Pulido, Lady Death has been a staple in the comics market since her debut in Evil Ernie #1 way back in 1991. She got her own mini-series the following year and the rest, as they say, is history. Multiple story lines have come and gone. I should know, I own almost everything ever published with Lady Death in it. I’ve got action figures, t-shirts, and statues, too! So when I got offered an advanced look at some exclusive art and write this article, I was pretty stoked. (GoD headquarters all abuzz that day.) I’ve never gotten the chance to meet the creator, but I love his work. Word has it, this is also a great jumping-on point for new readers!
I did get a chance to communicate with Pulido and he was very forthcoming about the ins and outs of this title, insofar as what we can expect to see in this book.
This January, Lady Death makes her return in a new ongoing monthly series, Lady Death #1, published by Boundless Comics, an imprint of Avatar Press.
The new comic book series will be written by original co-creator Brian Pulido along with Mike Wolfer (Gravel, Night of the Living Dead), with illustrations by Marcelo Mueller.
To get you ready for the new series, Boundless has collected for the first time ever the first issues of Lady Death comics from 2005 in Lady Death: Origins Volume 1. This first volume contains the 5-issue “Abandon All Hope” story arc, which tells Lady Death’s origin story and has art from Ron Adrian. This first 160-page graphic novel also contains the two-issue “Wicked” series with art by Richard Ortiz.
Future volumes will collect more issues of the long out-of-print Lady Death series. Volume 1 is on sale now.
