Booth 2304 at this year’s New York Comic-Con was once again occupied by the fine folks at Storm King Comics. Led by matriarch Sandy King Carpenter, they welcomed writers, artists, collaborators, and more. I was there to interview Mike Sizemore, who contributed an 8-issue story, Vortex, to the John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction comic book anthology. I was introduced to David J. Schow, writer of countless novels, short story collections as well as the noted screenwriter of The Crow and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part III. Schow is currently working with Storm King on The Standoff, the latest in the monthly Tales of Science Fiction line. See below for my interview with Schow.

It was something I did often in high school and college – the ol’ all-night movie marathon. As a 36-year-old married adult with 2 children, the concept of staying up all through the night watching movies is something that sounds unreasonable and completely illogical. But then I saw the advertisement pop up in my Facebook feed”¦ the Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, Long Island, NY, was hosting an all-night horror movie marathon. It took me over a week of intense debate as to whether I should do it, but on Saturday morning, with my wife’s permission (of course), I purchased my ticket for their 2018 Up All Night “Pay to Get Out” Horror Movie Marathon and headed out to meet my fate”¦ 8 horror films in 13 hours, one last great All Nighter… for now.

A red band trailer has been released for Leatherface, a prequel to Tobe Hooper’s horror classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The prequel is directed by French filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, whose previous credits include Inside (À l’intérieur), Livid (Livide), Among the Living (Aux yeux des vivants), and The ABCs of Death 2 segment “X is for Xylophone.” Starring is Jessica Madsen, Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, James Bloor, Vanessa Grasse, Stephen Dorff, and Lili Taylor.

When one thinks of the movie title The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, even those who’ve seen the film, we think of gore, bloodshed, and visceral horror. That is the reason, maybe more than any, why The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a classic of the genre. After watching a special screening on Friday night at the FEARnyc Film Festival in Manhattan, it again amazed me just how little blood and gore are in that film. What director/co-writer Tobe Hooper does use is a hot, disgusting atmospheric vibe; a grotesque arthouse quality, and unnerving sound design and score. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre screening was introduced by FEARnyc director John Capo and hosted by Heather Buckley from Fangoria and Dread Central.

Twelve years later, the horror landscape had shifted dramatically. Hooper’s low-budget exploitation flick inspired countless films, including John Carpenter’s Halloween and Ridley Scott’s Alien. By 1986, the slasher subgenre was in full swing, with franchises like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street releasing sequels each year.
