Locke and Key News Header

Every week of the year, new comic books hit store shelves and digital store fronts. Some of those comics have been going on for a while, and some of them haven’t. One of the comics that has, however, is Locke and Key. Written by Joe Hill with art by Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke and Key is probably my favorite comic being published today. But the only problem with the comic having gone on for as long as it has is that, well, it’s not very friendly to new readers. And even those readers who’ve been there since day one might get a little off track by the different parts of the Locke and Key mythology. And oh my goodness! There are so many keys! How can we decipher between them!?

Well friends, IDW Publishing has got you covered. This Wednesday, IDW and Locke and Key will be releasing a one-shot comic entitled Locke and Key: Guide To The Known Keys.

If you’re a comics fan with an iPad, you have reason to be happy this week as IDW Publishing has released a whole bunch of graphic novels from their library for release on Apple’s iBooks store. Now readers will be able to buy books directly from Apple without having to go through any other apps or sellers.

The books out this week include a first for IDW as they release the graphic novel Code Word: Geronimo, which is the story of the Navy Seals daring raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound that ended in his death. This all-new graphic novel is written by military expert Captain Dale Dye (USMC, retired) and Dr. Julia Dye. It is being released digitally on the same day it sees release in print.

The graphic novels included in IDW’s first batch for iBooks include almost twenty titles, many of which are some of best books IDW has ever released. Below is the list of books that are available now.

Locke & Key Television Series

Last year there were high hopes for a Locke & Key television series based on the IDW comic book by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, with big names like Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci working on the small-screen adaptation that was to air on FOX.

FOX ended up passing on the series and aside from being screened at year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, the pilot episode will apparently never see the light of day at FOX or anywhere else.

If you’re like most fans and didn’t get to see the pilot, you can now check out the trailer for the series to get a glimpse of what this show would have been like. Watch the 2 1/2-minute trailer here below.

Eisner AwardsThe nominations for the 2011 Eisner Awards, which celebrates the best in comic books and graphic novels, were announced yesterday. The awards winners will be announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con International on July 22 and the nominees represent a wide selection of this year’s standout books. This will be the 23rd year for the Eisner awards, which are largely described as the Oscar’s of the comic industry, and while there are a few other awards for comics, these are the big ones of the year.

Leading the nominees is Jim McCann and Janet Lee‘s Return of the Dapper Men, which nabbed five nominations. The unique story and art earned the book nominations in Best Publication for Teens, Best Graphic Novel-New, Best Writer, Best Artist, and Best Publication Design. Just behind Dapper Men with four nominations were two Comics of Doom favorites, Morning Glories (by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma) and Locke & Key (by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez). Joe Hill Locke & Key IDWMuch like his father before him, Joe Hill (son of Stephen King) is making the transition from printed page to big screen. Our friends at Latino Review are reporting that Hill’s critically acclaimed series Locke & Key will be adapted by the writing/producing dynamic duo, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci through their deal with DreamWorks.

The story centers around Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. Keyhouse is also home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all. Locke & Key is illustrated magnificently by Gabriel Rodriguez and published by IDW.

Locke & Key was nominated for Best Limited Series and Joe Hill was nominated for Best Writer at the 2009 Eisner Awards. Check out the trailer for the comic book IDW Publishing put out:

If you’re not familiar with the series, now is the time to get caught up, the series has been fantastic. Welcome to Lovecraft, the first book in the series, is available on trade paperback for around $15; $16.50 if you prefer hardcover).
