Shout! Factory To Release More Marvel Animated Titles
  |

Shout! Factory will be expanding on their previous relationship with Marvel Animation by releasing a series of titles under the Marvel Knights banner.

On July 13, The Super Hero Squad Show will be released on DVD, then it will be followed by releases of the Astonishing X-Men: Gifted motion comic, the Spider-Woman motion comic, the Iron Man: Extremis motion comic, and the previously unaired Black Panther series produced by BET. More titles are still to be announced.

I am really excited about these releases. I watched several installments of the Spider-Woman comic and the first installment of the Astonishing X-Men: Gifted motion comic. Also, I have really enjoyed The Super Hero Squad Show with its “kiddie” versions of Marvel Comics heroes.

Leaked Concept Art Was Not For Live-Action ‘Thor’ Movie
  |  @   |

Yesterday, CBM posted what they thought was leaked concept art for Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Thor movie. Though the image itself was labeled “Thor Movie Concept Design Art,” CBM couldn’t find its source. But, they did put a warning on the post that the image “could very well cause fits of anger amongst comic book purists,” mostly referring to the revamping of Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir.

Eventually it was discovered that the concept art was done by Dan Panosian, who’s previously done illustrations for Captain America and Green Lantern, as well as Superhero Movie. Via his Twitter account, Panosian cleared up the confusion. This was not the concept art for Branagh’s live-action Thor movie, although he thought it was when he accepted the commission from an Art Director who referred to the project as a “design for the Thor movie that Marvel is doing.”

Turns out that the Thor movie was actually the animated Thor movie. Panosian only found this out after he had submitted his work.

Panosian explains the mix-up as well as his ideas for the design on his Deviant Art page Urban Barbarian. Read the entire message here below.

DVD Review: Planet Hulk

Planet Hulk
2-Disc Special Edition DVD
Directed by Sam Liu
Starring Rick D. Wasserman, Lisa Ann Beley, Mark Hildreth, Liam O’Brien, Kevin Michael Richardson, Samuel Vincent, Advah Soudack, Michael Kopsa, Marc Worden
Lionsgate Home Entertainment
Release Date: February 2, 2010

Planet Hulk is the latest direct-to-DVD film from Marvel’s Animation Studio and it’s got a lot going for it. Director Sam Liu has previously worked on Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and screenwriter Greg Johnson worked on one of my personal favorites, Doctor Strange. The film is also based on one of the best Hulk stories of all time (written by the awesome Greg Pak) in which the Green Goliath is deemed too dangerous for Earth and exiled to another planet free of any intelligent life. Unfortunately something goes wrong and the Hulk’s ship crash lands on a war world where he’s immediately forced into slavery and forced to fight Gladiator-style for his freedom. All of these factors contributed to my Hulk-size anticipation of the film and I can thankfully say I was not disappointed.

Marvel To Develop Animated ‘Thor’ Cartoon
  |  @   |

The plan for Marvel, according to president of animation Eric Rollman, is to release an animated series behind the live-action movies that they release — this is now confirmed for the upcoming live-action film version of Thor.

The series will consist of 26 episodes that run 30 minutes each. These will be released in Fall of 2010.

Here’s the premise for this animated series…

The animated series will follow Thor, the Norse god of thunder, as he defends his mythical home of Asgard against fantastical villains, fiendish hordes, winged creatures and angry giants. The show will take place in various worlds — from mountainous landscapes to places of icy mists and fiery voids — and will include many of the comic’s supporting cast, including Balder the Brave, the Warriors Three and Thor’s evil adopted brother, Loki.
