Black Metal Friday: Denner/Shermann “Satan’s Tomb”
  |  @   |

Michael Denner and Hank Shermann are the legendary guitar duo behind the pioneering Danish metal outfit Mercyful Fate (the band that also gave us King Diamond). These axe masters are back with a new eponymous band. Denner/Shermann has just released its debut EP via powerhouse label Metal Blade Records on October 2, 2015.

Satan’s Tomb contains 4 tracks that would have been right at home on any of Mercyful Fate’s classic albums. Sean Peck‘s vocals even bear a striking resemblance to King Diamond. The band is rounded out by bassist Marc Grabowski and drummer Snowy Shaw, the latter of whom is also a King Diamond alum.

Thrashback Thursday: Metallica “Mercyful Fate” With King Diamond
  |  @   |

Today’s Thrashback Thursday is a two-for-one deal. Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich and King Diamond (aka Kim Bendix Peterson) are Danish countrymen. The two have been close friends for some time. Metallica even recorded their breakthrough second album, 1984’s Ride The Lightning in the studio owned by King Diamond and his band Mercyful Fate.

So strong is Metallica’s reverence for Mercyful Fate that they have, for many years, been performing a medley consisting of several of the band’s songs (“Satan’s Fall,” “Curse of the Pharaohs,” “A Corpse Without Soul,” “Into the Coven,” and “Evil”) which they simply call “Mercyful Fate.” A recorded version of the tribute appeared on Metallica’s Garage Inc.

When Metallica made a stop in King Diamond’s adopted hometown of Dallas Texas in 2008, they invited the King himself to join them onstage to lend his iconic lead vocals to the medley. Check out the footage of that performance here below.

Black Metal Friday: “Halloween” by King Diamond
  |  @   |

When serendipity drops Halloween on a Black Metal Friday in your lap, how can you help but think of the song “Halloween”?

King Diamond, both with Mercyful Fate and his own eponymous solo band, helped form both the black metal and thrash genres. Kim Bendix Petersen, the man behind the King Diamond persona, was one of the first true Satanists in heavy metal. Many acts had previously used occult imagery and satanism in a somewhat cartoonish fashion, but the King walked the walk and talked the talk. He has been very open about being a devout follower of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan. All of this lent a certain authenticity to King Diamond’s macabre, occult-fueled imagery and stage show — a show that I have the great fortune of witnessing tonight at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. Look for my coverage of that event right here on Geeks of Doom.

Meanwhile, in the spirit of the day, here is King Diamond from his first solo album, 1986’s Fatal Portrait with the track “Halloween.”

Sit On Satan’s Lap At Satanic Statue Proposed For Oklahoma Capitol
  |  @   |

Wouldn’t you like to take your children to sit on Satan’s lap?

If so, then you might be in luck, as the congregants of The Satanic Temple are hoping to make that a reality. The New York-based religious organization has officially submitted a design proposal for a satanic statue at the Oklahoma state Capitol to “complement and contrast” a Ten Commandments monument that currently resides on the public grounds.

The proposed statue would feature a 7-foot-tall rendering of Baphomet, the goat-headed winged Satanic deity, sitting cross-legged on a throne under a pentagram with a child on both sides of him. “The lap will serve as a seat for visitors,” read the description in The Satanic Temple’s application.
