It feels a bit strange, writing a review of Hellboy Winter Special 2019 when it is 72 degrees outside, but that’s Texas for you, make no mistake. Putting the hell in Hellboy, in my opinion. But, be that as it may, this is one amazing one-shot comic. In true Dark Horse fashion, everything is a bit darker and twisted than what most other comic companies produce. And that, my friends, is why I love almost everything they produce!
One of the fastest way a movie can win my attention is to opt for old school practical effects over the more convenient digital effects whenever possible. The more used, the better. The upcoming Hellboy reboot, which stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, and Daniel Dae Kim, is one of those movies.
With director Neil Marshall behind the camera, practical effects were an important ingredient in crafting this new adaptation of the Mike Mignola comic book of the same name. And to show off some of these practical effects, Lionsgate has released a new featurette video which focuses on the special effects. You can find it below.

In a time where the entire world’s information is available at our fingertips, it’s comforting to know that Hellboy will sit around with his enemies and chat. Origin stories can be difficult to incorporate, especially when it’s a character that is not as prevalent as others might be. Thanks to creators Mike Mignola and Ben Stenbeck, we get a deep dive into the life and times of an immortal killer in Koshchei The Deathless #1.

Lots of tentacles and creepy storylines are a big win in my book. Jenny Finn #1 delivers both with a healthy heap of mystery added for the hell of it. If anything, this particular Dark Horse comic book has an even heavier Lovecraftian feel to it than most of Mike Mignola‘s works.
