This week production began on Morbius, starring Jared Leto as the title character. Based on the Spider-Man anti-hero of the same name, the film will center on Michael Morbius, a scientist who is stricken with a rare blood disorder. In order to cure himself of his disease, Morbius uses a risky treatment involving vampire bats and electroshock therapy. But when one of the treatments goes wrong, it turns him into a living vampire. While he does need blood in order to survive, Morbius has superhuman strength, the ability to fly, and a healing factor.

The future looks pretty good for Sony’s Spider-Man-less universe. Venom turned out to be a bigger hit than expected, despite critics panning the film. So instead of going back to the drawing board to figure out what to do with these characters, the studio is pushing forward on some already announced titles. Morbius: The Living Vampire and Kraven the Hunter are among the two characters connected to Spider-Man lore who are getting their own films. And now, we are getting a few surprising updates on them.
For Morbius, that will be the next film to go into production. For Kraven the Hunter, well, we might see him go up against a certain webslinger. More on these reports, below.
Venom is considered to be the starting point for Sony’s Spider-Man-less Universe. It’s a superhero world where Spider-Man supporting characters, villains, and anti-heroes exist, but without the Webslinger. Don’t worry, many are still trying to wrap their heads around the idea that such a shared universe could work. But the studio believes they have something on their hands, as noted by the announcements of titles like Morbius, starring Jared Leto, and Kraven The Hunter, which is being penned by Richard Wenk.
But Sony has even bigger plans for this developing universe. According to new reports, they are making an effort to bring in more diversity and inclusiveness to it. This includes splitting Silver and Black, the Black Cat and Silver Sable spinoff from Love and Basketball director Gina Prince-Bythewood, into two standalone films. Additionally, the studio has announced plans for Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch films that would feature a Korean-American webslinger and an African-American superhero on the big screen. Sony is continuing to develop their newfound Spider-Man-less spinoff universe by building around the webslinger’s antiheroes, villains, and supporting characters. Along with Venom and Silver and Black, the studio has been working on Morbius.
That’s right Morbius, Marvel’s Living Vampire, who can be seen as both an ally and foe to Spidey, will be getting his very own film. And according to new reports the DC Extended Universe’s current Joker, Jared Leto, has signed to play the title character. More on the story below.
