‘Maniac Cop’ Remake Finds Its Screenwriter In Comics Scribe Ed Brubaker
  |

It’s been two years since it was first announced that filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) had signed on to produce a continuation of sorts of the 1988 cult horror-action classic Maniac Cop. It was rumored at the time that Refn might even direct the film as well, be it a prequel or sequel. Following the release of that news the project went cold, though Refn’s unabashed love of the original and its two sequels resulted in his teaming up with William Lustig, the director of Maniac Cop and its vastly superior 1990 sequel, for an audio commentary that accompanied last year’s top-notch Blu-ray release of Maniac Cop 2 (a disc I highly recommend by the way).

Now it appears that the new Maniac Cop film is back on and it is officially a remake with Refn and Lustig producing. The French distribution and international sales company Wild Bunch will be announcing it as part of a slate of upcoming features they’re expected to unveil at next week’s Cannes Film Festival. Among them is a sequel to last year’s surprise hit Spring Breakers scripted by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and new films from controversial filmmakers Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers) and Gaspar Noé (Irreversible).

Sam Mendes Could Direct Back-To-Back James Bond Films
  |  @   |

It was recently reported that Skyfall director Sam Mendes was likely to return to direct Bond 24. This comes after repeated exclamations that he would not return to direct due to his obligation to produce the theatrical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and an adaptation of King Lear.

However, the director reportedly entered into talks with EON Productions and Sony Pictures to come back direct another Bond film. Now, there are a few more details coming out of those talks which are pinning the filmmaker to possibly directing not one but two James Bond films.

According to ShowBiz411, Mendes is coming back for Bond 24 and will end up directing Bond 25 as well.

Two New Trailers For ‘Drive’ Director Nicolas Winding Refn and Star Ryan Gosling’s ‘Only God Forgives’
  |  @   |

One of the most intriguing and impressive talents working today, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn consistently presents movies to our eyes that—whether you ultimately decide to love or hate them—will burrow their way deep into your skull and fuse themselves to your brain. To put it simply, once you’ve watched a Winding Refn film, it’s nearly impossible to get it out of your head.

The director’s previous works include the original Pusher trilogy, Bronson, and Valhalla Rising. But perhaps his best known movie is Drive, which starred Ryan Gosling as a stunt/getaway driver and went on to receive high critical praise.

Now the director and actor have re-teamed for a new movie titled Only God Forgives, and, if these two new international trailers are any indication, it will be just as dark and violent and visually stunning as we’ve come to expect from Winding Refn. You can check out the two (semi-NSFW) trailers below.

Netflix Review: Drive
  |

Drive
Netflix Streaming
DVD | Blu-ray
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn
Starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, Oscar Isaac, Kaden Leos
FilmDistrict
Originally Released: May 20, 2011

Let me just begin this article by pointing out the final paragraph of this post is the most important of the review.

Featuring Ryan Gosling amidst an impressive cast, the Nicholas Winding Refn-directed Drive is one of those rare films that become immediate classics. While touting some action and crime thriller material, the film is essentially a character study, with extraordinary technical work and some significant symbolism – all of which when combined demand your attention throughout the entire movie.

Drive focuses around an unnamed protagonist known only as The Driver, who leads a life of dichotomy involving cars – working as a mechanic and stunt driver by day, but by night works as a getaway driver for criminals in Los Angeles working heists. Moving to a new apartment, he lives next door to neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her son Benicio (Kaden Leos). The three develop a new friendship that seems to put The Driver onto a new passageway in life.
