Keith Moon - The Who

Even though he’s been dead for 34 years, Keith Moon, the eccentric, devil-may-care wild man known as “Moon the Loon” who drummed for the famous British rock band The Who during their glory years, still makes news on par with his crazy persona.

The UK website The Guardian is reporting that organizers for the 2012 Olympics wanted Moon to play at the opening ceremony in London, where the games are to be held this Summer.

Unbelievably, especially in this information age we live in, nobody in those circles knew that Moon had died of a sedative overdose back in 1978.

The Who’s current manager, Bill Curbishley, told the Sunday Times in London that he was approached to see if Moon would be “available” to perform with the surviving members of The Who.

Fans Want Iron Maiden To Open The 2012 Summer Olympics In London

Iron Maiden For 2010 Summer OlympicsOne of the biggest disappointments of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, was the fact that Rush, the country’s greatest musical achievement, was not part of the opening or closing ceremonies. Yes, William Shatner and Neil Young were there, but c’mon, where the hell was Rush?! Bad move, Canada, [I love you, but] bad move.

The next Olympics will be the Summer games in London, England, in 2012. The options for musical choices is massive, but music fans are already voicing their opinions on which act should be part of the ceremonies. One in particular are Iron Maiden fans (and I happen to be one of them), who are joining the Facebook group IRON MAIDEN to open the 2012 London Olympic Games in hopes of getting the British heavy metal band to open the games. As of this writing, there’s already over 36,000 people who’ve joined the group. There’s also a FB download group requesting that fans download Iron Maiden’s “Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner,” with lyrics fitting for Summer Olympics, on July 19, 2010 in support of getting the band to open the games.

And check out the image that was created for the groups of the band’s mascot Eddie, taken from the classic “Trooper” art, holding the Olympic torch against the backdrop of an Olympic track. (That’s the image here at top.) Just think of having something like that on a T-shirt!!!

Lost: The Final Season

ABC has officially announced that its ultimate milk and honey show, Lost, will begin its final season on February 2, 2010. The station will attempt to make an event out of the evening by airing one of their hour-long recap episodes right before the two-hour Lost premiere airs. The final season is set to air 18 episodes, with the premiere and likely two-hour finale counting as four of the total episodes. There have been talks of the show possibly taking a short break when the upcoming Winter Olympics take place, but that is still unknown for sure.

The sixth season has the ultimate of challenges ahead of it. The show has consistently delivered some of the best writing and most compelling television in the history of the medium, but with so many questions left to answer, the task at hand is for them to remain as flawless as they’ve been while still answering most of the mysteries that remain. And with one of the mysteries being the random “sightings” of deceased characters, expect to see many familiar faces within the final run.

Geek Cred: President Obama With Lightsaber

One of the greatest joys of having Barack Obama as President of the United States is having a bona fide geek leading the country. The Pres is into comic books and Star Trek, and has even thrown up the Vulcan “live long and prosper” salute. When he was still a US Senator, he had on his website a photo of himself in front of a Superman statue. This is a man after our own hearts.

Now, the geeky Obama strikes again with a recent photo-op on the White House lawn where he’s wielding a toy lightsaber after a fencing demonstration. The event was held yesterday to promote Chicago’s bid for the 2016 Olympic Games.
