$5 MP3 Album Deal: Pantera ‘The Best of Pantera’
  |

This month Pantera‘s The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits! is available as part of Amazon’s mammoth 1000 MP3s for $5 each deal.

It’s hard to overstate Pantera’s influence on the heavy metal landscape. Phil Anselmo‘s harsh, aggressive vocals bouncing on Dimebag Darrell‘s razor-sharp guitar licks all riding on bassist Rex Brown and drummer Vinnie Paul‘s impossibly heavy groove gave metal a much needed kick up the you-know-what. They originally began as a glam metal band (good luck finding those first four albums), but it was their work of the late “˜80s and early “˜90s that warrants your attention on The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys’ Vulgar Hits! including tracks such as “Cowboys From Hell,” “Mouth For War,” “5 Minutes Alone,” and “Revolution Is My Name.”

Browse all 1,000 albums on sale this month for only $5 each, as well as several albums on sale this week for only $2.99 each.

‘Dimebag’ Darrell: 7th Anniversary Of Pantera Guitarist’s Death
  |

Former Pantera and Damageplan guitarist “˜Dimebag’ Darrell died 7 years ago today. His murder was a story which shocked the whole rock and metal music world.

Born Darrell Abbott on August 20, 1966 in Ennis, Texas, he formed the heavy metal band Pantera with his brother Vinnie Paul on drums in 1981. Finally settling on a line up encompassing lead singer Phil Anselmo and bass player Rex Brown, Pantera began as a glam metal band before changing their plan of attack with their seminal heavy metal album Cowboys From Hell in 1991.

Judas Priest Ram Down ‘American Idol’
  |

I despise American Idol. It goes against every fiber of belief I have in music. The Simon Cowell Cookie Cutter Factory of creating “stars” really gets on my last nerve. Despite my negativity towards the-show-that-distracts-millions, I can’t help but write about it at the moment, because metal gods Judas Priest made a guest appearance on the series finale the other night – and blew the whole show out of the water with a great performance, which you can view at the bottom of this post.

My hatred for American Idol aside, you have to admit that this is a good move for Priest in the publicity department. As reported here numerous times, the band are about to embark on their farewell tour, and making an impressive appearance on a show like this is a good way to get the word out beyond the regular fan base.
