Here’s Patton Oswalt’s Idea For An ‘Unbreakable’ Trilogy

Patton Oswalt

Stand-up comedian, actor, and author Patton Oswalt has a new book out titled Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film. Such an addiction obviously means that he’s often pondering the many movies he’s seen, and this sometimes leads to some interesting ideas.

One example of this involves Unbreakable, the 2002 film from director M. Night Shyamalan. The movie was Shyamalan’s next film after his breakout megahit The Sixth Sense, and stars Bruce Willis as a man who discovers that he cannot be harmed and Samuel L. Jackson as a man who can be harmed very easily.

In his movie pondering, Oswalt realized that the story of Unbreakable should have continued not only with a sequel, but two sequels to create a trilogy. He stopped by to chat with Screen Junkies about this idea, and they even made their own trailer for how this trilogy might look. You can see Oswalt describe his vision for the trilogy in the video below.

The Muppets

Disney is reportedly quite unhappy with the scathing reviews and middling box office of Muppets Most Wanted, the latest big screen outing of the late Jim Henson’s adorable felt creations. Thus they have announced today that the beloved characters will be taken in a completely different direction for their next feature film.

The studio has decided to unite The Muppets with two of their most profitable franchises in adapting Patton Oswalt‘s epic filibuster from an April 2013 episode of the NBC sitcom Parks & Recreation. In the full nearly 9-minute video (which you can watch here below), Oswalt wove an amazing tale that combined the Star Wars and Marvel universes in one awe-inspiring adventure that would shatter the minds of geeks the world over. According to an unnamed spokesperson at the studio, Disney feels that this story could work, without undermining Star Wars: Episode VII and the various Marvel Studios projects in various stages of development.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Jerry Seinfeld‘s brilliant web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is one of those addictive pleasures that leaves you entertained and occasionally a bit smarter than before you first started watching. I prefer it to most comedy shows on television because its simple premise, spelled out in the title, is a gateway into a world of warm hilarity and intelligent and heartfelt conversations that reveal facets of the personalities involved you couldn’t find in their performances on film, TV, and the stand-up comedy arena.

The series, sponsored by Acura, recently returned for its third season with Louis C.K. as Seinfeld’s guest. This week, the acerbic comic giant takes out for a hot shot of exquisite java a comedian beloved by geeks the world over: Patton Oswalt. True to form, the two funnymen take off for their destination in a 1981 DMC DeLorean, the car that took Michael J. Fox Back to the Future in three beloved sci-fi comic adventures spanning 1985-1990.

Patton Oswalt Star Wars Filibuster

Sometimes Patton Oswalt is led to speak on certain things, and speak he does. And people listen. Because the man is incredibly thoughtful and intelligent, and he can oftentimes make sense of the senseless.

For many geeks out there, making sense of Warner Brothers’ decision to cast Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the Superman vs. Batman sequel to Man of Steel (and beyond) is impossible. Beyond comprehension. But still, Oswalt took to Facebook to argue why he thinks Affleck is a good choice for the role, and why everyone just needs to calm down.

You can read what he had to say below.
