Now that Star Wars: Episode VIII has been pushed back to a December 15, 2017 release, many were wondering if films scheduled near that date would be rescheduled. For reasons unknown, Fox has already confirmed that Avatar 2 will be moving to a new date that has yet to be announced. Now Steven Spielberg‘s Ready Player One is also making a move to a new date. He earned a much deserved Emmy nomination for his work as the complex Danny Rayburn in the Netflix series hit Bloodline. He is set to appear in the Gareth Edwards-directed film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is the first of the planned spinoffs Disney has in store for the franchise.
Now it is being reported that the actor is gearing up for another sci-fi film. According to a new report, Mendelsohn is in talks to play the antagonist in Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Ernest Cline‘s Ready Player One. More on the story below.
Back in March Steven Spielberg was named the director of Ready Player One. The film is an adaptation of the Ernest Kline novel of the same name. But because Spielberg has been quite busy working on Bridge of Spies and The BFG, casting director Ellen Lewis has been responsible with overseeing the auditioning process.
So far Gene Wilder is the only actor rumored for a role. Previous reports have attached him to play James Donovan Halliday – creator of OASIS, the fictional gaming world that serves as the setting for the novel. It may be a while before we get a confirmation on that, but there is a new shortlist of actresses who are vying for the female lead. Elle Fanning (Maleficent, Super 8), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, The Signal), and Lola Kirke (Mistress America) are three of the top contenders the role of Art3mis. With Steven Spielberg is confirmed to direct two major films: Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One and Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Fans of both novels have already put together their dream cast. The BFG is slated for a July 2016 release, with Ready Player One set for a December 2017 release. While the former has already got its cast, the latter will eventually get to its casting phase.
But a new rumor going around says that Spielberg may want Gene Wilder to come out of retirement to star in one of the two films. More on this story below.
