FREE: Relapse Records 184-Song Sampler For 25th Anniversary
  |  @   |

If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool metal fan like me, you need no introduction to independent label Relapse Records. For the last quarter of a century the Philadelphia record label has been home to some of the most revered acts in the metal world. Their roster reads like a who’s who of influential and beloved artists: High On Fire, Mastodon, Pig Destroyer, A.C., Death, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dying Fetus, Obituary, Nile, Suffocation, Neurosis, Voivod, Revocation, and many, many more have called the label home at one point or another.

So, imagine my excitement when I heard that, in celebrating their 25th anniversary, Relapse has posted a 184-song sampler to their bandcamp page and it is a 100% FREE download. Yeah, you read that right — 184 tracks for free!

Black Metal Friday: “Nattens Barn” by Myrkur
  |  @   |

Myrkur is the Icelandic word for darkness. Myrkur is also the name of a one-woman black metal project from Denmark, incorporating elements of choral music and ambient post metal.

Watch the official video for Myrkur’s debut single “Natten’s Barn” here below. Also below, I have included the short trailer video for Myrkur’s album, wherein she explains her love of and philosophy on black metal.

Myrkur’s self-titled debut record has only been out a few weeks and has already become incredibly polarizing among the black metal community. Many black metal purists hate the incorporation of any foreign elements into the formula, not to mention that certain factions of the scene harbor an thinly veiled undercurrent of misogyny. Other, more forward-thinking critics are hailing the Myrkur record as a breath of fresh air and are able to see past the pretty face of Amelie Bruun, the woman behind the music, to realize that the Myrkur record is one of the best black metal offerings of the year. Check it out for yourself and form your own opinion.

Tombs
CD | MP3
Relapse Records
Original Release Date: June 10, 2014

When one hears the term “black metal,” the first thing that springs to mind might be a bunch of guys in black leather and spikes with corpse paint, burning churches and murdering their way across Scandinavian countries. The last image that the name of this often-feared and misunderstood genre evokes would be an average-looking bunch of guys in street clothes from Brooklyn, New York. But that is exactly what Mike Hill and his band Tombs are. In fact, they are on the cutting edge of the genre.
