Godzilla

It’s taken decades for Japan’s time-honored kaiju genre of cinema to properly invade American shores, but with Guillermo del Toro’s futuristic fantasy epic Pacific Rim set to tear the box office limb from limb in July and Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla movie tentatively set for next May the thirst for giant monsters and robots consuming mass quantities of wanton destruction has rarely been greater. Next year’s Godzilla adventure won’t be the first time the scaly radioactive giant lizard first immortalized in 1954’s Gojira (released here two years later as Godzilla: King of the Monsters) has undergone the Hollywood blockbuster treatment…unless you choose to not acknowledge Roland Emmerich’s stillborn 1998 attempt as many of us have already done.

The first major attempt to make an American Godzilla movie took place in the early 1980’s, and had it happened it would have united some of the greatest artists in the fields of feature film special effects, make-up, and conceptual art that the world of fantastic cinema ever birthed into popular culture. In 1982 Steve Miner, best known as the director of Friday the 13th Parts II and III and Halloween: H20, made a deal with Godzilla’s home studio Toho to bring the big G to the U.S. in a grand-scale motion picture as befitting a creature of his stature and cultural impact: Godzilla, King of the Monsters 3-D!

Rick Baker Image

Makeup artist Rick Baker is all about practical effects over computer-generated effects, as he should be. The man is the most decorated makeup artist in movie history, in terms of Academy Awards, having been nominated eleven times, winning seven of the golden statues. He’s even (finally) gotten his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

So when the man says he wants to work on the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII for Disney, it’s probably something they should get on making a reality as soon as possible.

the wolfman

It’s been a long, dark road for the Universal Pictures re-imagining of their own classic monster icon in The Wolfman. Though many troubles were faced on this path, the movie is now only a couple of short weeks away from being unleashed upon us, and the studio is on the prowl to try and get folks truly excited.

Among the goodies being released this week, a couple of new posters and images are here to peek at. One of the posters is your basic movie one-sheet that you’ll see on walls and in movie theaters (that’s it here at right; click for larger view), while the other is a special limited edition poster from Basil Gogos that looks more like a homage to the ’40s monster than this new creation. Both posters are worth a glance if you’re into that sorta thing. As for images, there is quite a few making their rounds today — some of which you’ve probably seen, while others will be new. We’ve included a few of the new images below.

Head over to the other side to read a synopsis and witness the rest of these new images and posters.

Benicio Del Toro’s ‘The Wolfman’ Gets A Second Trailer

If you haven’t seen anything from Joe Johnston‘s (Jumanji, Hidalgo) The Wolfman, then you are missing out big time. A remake of the classic monster movie from 1941, the movie looks like it keeps a lot of that old school charm while utilizing today’s technological advancements to bring some fantastic tones and realism to the party.

Most second trailers have a nasty habit of using almost the entirety of their initial first trailer, with a few small new bits sprinkled in from time-to-time. This new Wolfman trailer is having none of that, they make sure that you get your money’s worth before you even have to pay for anything with a trailer composed of almost all new images and clips that we haven’t seen yet. Another thing the trailer does is use modern music to a period setting with some guitar melodies accompanying the old Victorian setting — always a cool little mix.

Click over for a full, detailed new synopsis and to watch the trailer, which was released via Apple.
