The first Pacific Rim was more style over substance. Where the film excelled in its visual spectacle, it clearly lacked in strong character development and an engaging narrative. With so much missing, it’s hard to believe that a sequel could ever be greenlit. And yet, here we are, with Pacific Rim Uprising. An unnecessary sequel, that no one asked for, and yet, it’s still so much fun to watch. My full review below.
Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim gets high marks for its giant robot vs Kaiju fun. Though the film was more style than substance, and almost all of it took place in the dark, making it that much harder to see the fights. However, Pacific Rim: Uprising looks like it will take a new direction. The connective tissues of its predecessor are still there. Familiar characters are making a return, and John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father (played by Idris Elba) gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous Kaiju.
Of course, there are the giant robots and Kaiju. However, the sequel seems to be introducing new elements into the franchise. And one that may present a threat to the Jaeger pilots when another Jaeger appears to them as the opposition. Check out the latest trailer below.
Universal Pictures has released the final trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising. The film is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, and sees the world threatened by the towering monsters known as Kaiju once more.
Now it is up to a new team of young Jaeger pilots to take place of the legends that came before them and defend the earth, or else watch it be destroyed. However, based on the trailer, there appears to be a huge twist. Check it out below.
Universal has released the first trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising. Directed by Steven S. DeKnight, with a script by Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and Steven S. DeKnight and T.S. Nowlin, the sequel stars John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Scott Eastman in new roles. The film also sees the return of Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day, who reprise their respective roles.
Back in September, Universal and Legendary Pictures took Pacific Rim 2off its release schedule of August 4, 2017 and gave its projected August 4, 2017 opening date to Pitch Perfect 3. Guillermo Del Toro, who directed the original that grossed $411 million worldwide in the summer of 2013, remained optimistic that the project would still be moving forward, submitting a script and budget to the studios a month after the sequel was put on hold.
Deadline is now reporting that the project is no longer on the development back burner, but it now has a different director. Del Toro has been replaced by Steven S. DeKnight.
