Contest: ‘Neon Angel: A Memoir Of A Runaway’ Book
  |  @   |

The Runaways, which stars of Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning at Cherie Currie, is based on Currie’s autobiography Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway, so to celebrate the film’s wide release in theaters this weekend, we here at Geeks of Doom have five (5) copies to give away to some lucky readers!

Five (5) winners will each receive:

  • One (1) copy of Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway

I’ve read the book and trust me, it’s a good one. Currie talks about her upbringing and then goes into detail about her time with The Runaways, which was an all-girl teenage rock band in the 1970s and if you see the movie (which I suggest you do), you’ll see how just how hard these young girls had it and what they did for rock and roll. Currie’s original version of the autobiography has been out of print since the 1990s, but thanks to It Books, the book is not only back in print, but has also been improved upon. I now only three copies of this book (2 of the original; one of the new version), so yeah, I’m lovin’ this contest. So, enter to win!!!

TO ENTER: There’s just two simple steps:

(1) Make sure you’re subscribed to the Geeks of Doom email digest. If you’re not then click here and sign up. (If you’re already a subscriber, then go right to the next step.)

(2) Fill out the entry form here below and submit. (Form is here after the jump.)

Good luck!

New TV Spot, Pics & Soundtrack Details For ‘The Runaways’ [Updated]
  |  @   |

The Runaways feature film is almost here, and we have a few details, images, and clips to tide you over for now.

First up, check out some new images here below from the film of Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie, and the rest of the cast. These are some great shots and I feel they do a great job of depicting the actresses as the rock and rolling bad girl musicians. [Updated: I’ve added a few more pictures, the last four below are new today from the movie’s official Facebook page.]

Next, there’s a new TV spot for the film. It’s a quick one, but totally worth watching as there’s a few extra scenes in there that were not in the trailers. The more I see, the more I know I’m going to love this movie.

Lastly, the all-important soundtrack! This is a biopic about an all-girl rock band from the 1970s, so not only is there the originals and covers of The Runaways‘ songs, as well as Joan Jett‘s “Don’t Abuse Me,” but also some good seventies tunage from the likes of The Sex Pistols, David Bowie, MC5, and the Sex Pistols. In the film, Stewart and Fanning do their own vocals, and let me tell you, as a life-long Runaways fan I think these ladies not only look the part, but they also sound it too! The Runaways Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD hits stores on March 23, 2010 — a few days after the film’s March 19 release — but is available for pre-order right now! Also, ff you order the digital download version of the album from the Runaways Soundtrack site, you’ll get it on March 16, 2010!

Check out the full soundtrack listing here below.

Brian K. Vaughan Breaks Hearts; Leaves ‘Lost’ Writing Team
  |  @   |

Very recently an episode of Top Chef Masters aired in which chefs created dishes using only Dharma Initiative-approved food items from the show Lost. These dishes were served to the show’s writing and producing team, including Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, and Brian K. Vaughan. As a massive fan of Lost, I recall being reminded of how awesome it was knowing Vaughan — creator of amazing comic books like Y: The Last Man, Pride of Baghdad, and Runaways — was also a part of this special show. Now this is no more, as it has been confirmed that Brian K. Vaughan has left the show to move on to other things.

In a brief, passing moment during a Q&A session, Damon Lindelof was asked what Vaughan was like, to which he simply replied “Unfortunately he has left for greener pastures. When he first came on the show Jorge Garcia was ecstatic because he’s a huge fan of his work.” This depressing news was later confirmed by ABC.

This of course doesn’t mean that Lost is going to suck or anything extreme like that — Vaughan didn’t even join the show up until season 3 — but the mark he left on the show while he was there will forever be appreciated. Namely, the amount of fantastic pop culture references he slipped into various episodes was especially enjoyable.
