Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

SDCC 2010: Marvel Captain America Panel: Chris Evans 03Fans saw their first glimpse of Captain America: The First Avenger at Marvel Studios panel today at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

The teaser trailer opened with lots of red, white, and blue imagery over top old World War II footage of soldiers marching in line and iconic imagery, like Hilter walking in Paris and U.S. soldiers rising the flag at Iwo Jima. The old video footage plays as FDR’s famous “Infamy Speech” is in voiceover.

When the black and white footage ends, we see the Captain America shield symbol, and then Captain America for the first time in a baggy unflattering suit, and finally the shield which is hurdled at the camera to end the clip.

The first glimpse of Captain America’s suit looked much like the prototype sketches that previously leaked online. The “mask” is more akin to something out of the Ultimates version rather than the classic suit that features tiny wings on the head.

SDCC 2010: Kevin Feige Responds To Hulk Recasting Decision (Sort Of)

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

The Incredible HulkAt the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con today, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, off-handedly responded to a fan question about the decision to recast the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the upcoming Avengers film rather than asking Edward Norton to reprise the role from The Incredible Hulk.

“He’s not here today,” Feige said in response to the question during the Marvel Studios panel, which was simply “Ed Norton?”. He then basically took a page out of Norton’s classy statement explaining why he wasn’t attached to the project and declared that the panel wasn’t quite over (perhaps eluding to the Avengers announcement that came later on).

The crowd’s reaction, a mix of silence and booing across the room, seemed less than satisfied. This was also the case during the Avengers cast announcement when Avengers co-star and Comic-Con favorite Robert Downey Jr. introduced Mark Ruffalo, who then was brought on stage.

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

The Geeks of Doom crew has been at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con since its preview night on Wednesday, and Dave3 and I have been in the San Diego Convention Center’s main auditorium, Hall H, all day, every day since Thursday morning.

At around 5pm today just before Universal’s panel for Paul and Cowboys & Aliens was about to begin, a fight broke out hall, which was packed to capacity (over 6,000 seats). A young man was taken out on a stretcher, while his alleged attacker was carted off in handcuffs by police.

Dave and I, along with fellow Doomers Tom Cheredar and Andrew Sorcini, were sitting about 10 rows back and to the side from where the fight occurred and witnessed a lot of what happened. Typically, I wouldn’t have bothered to write about a ‘fight’ at the convention, but in the past few hours since the incident occurred, I’ve seen reports from the likes of the LA Times that are quite skewed and wanted to give a better account of what happened.

My main problem with these mainstream reports are that they make it seem like attendees all just stood around gawking and taking cell phone pictures while a man laid injured. This is NOT what happened.

Here’s what did happen, from what several of us witnessed [we were also sitting with our friends John and Matt, as well as the guys from SlashFilm and The Totally Rad Show, so we all talked about what we saw happen].

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

SDCC 2010: Marvel Avengers Panel: Robert Downey JrIn a surprise move, the cast of Avengers made their debut in person at the end of Marvel Studios film panel in Hall H at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con.

A teaser clip was shown, consisting of Colonial Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) speaking about a super team while the Avengers logo slowly takes form.

The crowd went wild as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige welcomed Jackson on stage to introduce the first half of the Avengers cast that had already been announced: Clark Gregg (S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), the latter of whom took over the mic.

Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

SDCC 2010: Green Lantern Panel: Ryan ReynoldsThe cast and crew of the Green Lantern movie was on hand at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the upcoming film, due out in 2011. Also, the very first footage from the film was show (see description of it here below).

Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Geoff Johns, decked out in Green Lantern gear, was introduced first to get things rolling and said the week he spent on set was the best experience of his life. Considering Johns’ history working with legendary director Richard Donner, that’s saying a lot.

“When I first worked for Richard Donner, we talked about making Green Lantern and one of the producers said ‘Can we do the movie without the ring?’ and right there I thought: “There’s never going to be a Green Lantern movie,” said Johns, who added that it’s been incredible to see what director Martin Campbell and crew have done.

The costume itself wasn’t shown, which Campbell described as being lines of musculature. “A lot of thought has been given to it and it is a work of progress,” Campbell said.
