Shutter Island
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring Ben Kingsley, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams
Rated R
Release date: February 19, 2010

What makes a movie great? Is it meeting the expectation of greatness? Can a movie be viewed solely on its own merit anymore without comparing it to something else you saw that you liked better or worse, or is that what watching and understanding movies is all about? I thought about that a lot after seeing Shutter Island.

It is in our nature to view a movie not only on its own merit but comparatively against like sources. Martin Scorsese has made a lot of brilliant movies but is it fair to always compare each new one to the classics he has already made? His latest film will make you rethink that process. It is the type of film that will make you forget his stable of gangster movies that most people would try to define him by. If you have ever wondered what a Scorsese horror film would look like, Shutter Island is the answer.

The movie opens as two U.S. Marshals, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), arrive on Shutter Island. They have been invited to Ashecliffe Hospital to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), a patient at the facility. Their arrival doesn’t seem to be met with much enthusiasm. The staff is less than cooperative, the hospital’s chief psychiatrist Dr. John Crawley (Sir Ben Kingsley) offers feigned assistance and right away the case seems steeped in impossibility. She was locked in her room, no one saw her leave, and there are no signs of exit. Not to mention they are on an island in the middle of a hurricane.

Perfect Progression? Martin Scorsese & Robert De Niro To Re-Team For New Mob Movie
  |  @   |

Reuters is reporting that while in Berlin for the Berlin Film Festival, director Martin Scorsese confirmed a dream of many film fans: the re-teaming of himself and Robert De Niro for another go in the violent world of mobsters.

When these two mega-stars of cinema history team up, classics have been known to be born. The first time they collaborated in 1973, a movie called Mean Streets was made. Since then, many beloved titles have followed, including Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, and Casino, which was the last time they worked together (not counting Shark Tale, of course).

In what sounds like the perfect next step for the duo, they are planning to work again, only this time, it sounds like it will be more of a reflection piece, with De Niro playing a big name in organized crime looking back on his life.

In Case You Missed Them: The 2010 Super Bowl Commercial Movie Spots
  |  @   |

Tonight was the big game, and to sum things up, booze and gumbo be flowin’ strong in the French Quarters of New Orleans tonight.

The obvious big draw of the Super Bowl is the game itself, but right behind that it the unveiling of some of the best commercials you’ll see. Recent years have been an incredible disappointment for the advertisement industries, and it has seemed like very few companies have anyone working for them with fresh and funny ideas. So would this year be the year when commercials rose back to their former glory, or would failure loom once again?

The short answer is no, no there was not any glory. The majority of this year’s commercials, like recent years, were utter garbage, and that’s just sad and honest truth. The only real bright spots of the year came from the always-popular Bud Lite ads, and Doritos made a strong showing themselves. There were a couple of decent ones scattered around in between these, but that’s about all there is to it. You can head over to SPIKE to check out all of the commercials!

Paramount Mysteriously Pushes Back Martin Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island’
  |  @   |

The fall movie schedule is usually the best time of the year for tried and true movie fans. The fun-but-mindless amusement park movies are gone, and the more critically acclaimed are setting up shop. These are the movies that don’t shatter box office records, but they do set themselves up with little golden man hopes of getting an Academy Award nomination (or several) delivered to their doorstep.

After the surprising announcement earlier this year that there would actually be ten Best Picture nominees this year instead of the regular five nods, the chances for a movie getting in has greatly improved. Even with this giant change, Paramount has decided to risk fate and push one of the big boy Oscar contenders back to the very brink of when a movie is still eligible for nomination. The movie? Martin Scorsese‘s creepy looking horror/drama Shutter Island, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. The movie was originally slated to be released on October 2, but is now set for a February 19, 2010 unveiling. (Read: Watch Leonardo DiCaprio In Martin Scorsese’s “˜Shutter Island’ Trailer)

Watch Leonardo DiCaprio In Martin Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island’ Trailer
  |  @   |

The first trailer for Martin Scorsese‘s new film Shutter Island has been released on Apple, and it looks intense. You can head over there for the HD version of the trailer.

The movie follows Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), two U.S. Marshals who come to a prison-like hospital for the criminally insane that is located on an island off the coast of Massachusetts. The marshals are called out to the hospital due to the disappearance of a woman who was being kept there for committing murder. The confusing thing about it all, is that the hospital is in a seemingly-inescapable Alcatraz-like location with eleven miles of cold, cold water between them and land. To make things even more chaotic — the presence of a 67th patient in a hospital inhabited by 66 causes the marshals to wonder what exactly is going on at Shutter Island.

This is one of the best trailers that I’ve seen in a while. It has a really creepy vibe to it and looks like it could be a third movie among The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. I also do not think that I would be out of line to claim that this trailer alone is scarier than most full-length horror movies that we see these days.
