Sony had high hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man. The studio had set up for a subsequent sequel and spinoffs in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, since the film performed disappointingly at the box office and with critics, Sony had to cancel all of that. In the end, it may have been the best decision for the character for when it was announced that the studio would share the character with Marvel, everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was met with overwhelmingly high praise when he was introduced in Captain America: Civil War.

That kind of excitement can only help him leading up to his formal introduction in his standalone film due out in the summer of next year.
