Book Review: The Bazaar Of Bad Dreams: Stories By Stephen King

The Bazaar of Bad Dreams: Stories
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle | Audible Audiobook | Audio CD
By Stephen King
Scribner Books | Simon & Schuster
Release Date: November 3, 2015

The newest Stephen King is always a literary event, and today is no exception. The Bazaar Of Bad Dreams brings us a collection of visits to the dark side – the side of no happy endings. Although my favorite Stephen King creations are his giant 1,000+ pagers where you get lost inside the perilous journey, he tells these little stories very well too. His short stories are always like little scary appetizers that almost always end ambiguously. For you movie-over-books people (nothing wrong with that), they are like the tales in Creepshow – short and eerie, with bad, weird, or worse endings left to your own imagination.

Check out the synopsis and the list of stories below.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Warped
An Engaging Guide to the Never-Aired 8th Season
Paperback | Kindle

Release date: October 13, 2015

Back in the 1990s, before everything you ever wanted to know was just a high-speed Internet click away, the best way to get a behind-the-scenes look and in depth analysis of your favorite television series was to pick up the inevitable Authorized Companion Guide. And let me tell you something, I love a good TV show companion guide.

I was (and still am) a proud owner of the Xena: Warrior Princess Official Guide To the Xenaverse, Hercules, The Legendary Journeys: The Official Companion, and Frasier: The Official Companion Book to the Award-Winning Paramount Television Comedy, amongst others. (Yes, lengthy titles are a common trend for these things). But sometimes, if you want to get down to the nitty gritty, you want an unofficial guide, such as The Nitpicker’s Guide for Classic Trekkers and its follow up The Nitpicker’s Guide for Next Generation Trekkers, both of which I own.

The Drafter
The Peri Reed Chronicles Book 1
Hardcover | Kindle
by Kim Harrison
Gallery Books | Simon and Schuster
Release date: September 1, 2015

Bestselling author Kim Harrison steps away from urban fantasy and the witches, vampires, and other supernatural creatures that inhabit the world of her bounty hunter Rachel Morgan in The Hollows series to take a stab at a futuristic time-travel action-thriller with The Drafter, the first book of her new Peri Reed Chronicles series.

Peri Reed is a drafter, which means she has the ability to time-travel and alter history, an uncommon and valuable skill to have in the year 2030. Peri uses her rare gift to protect others while working as an operative for Opti, a top-secret government agency. Unfortunately, each trip back in time causes memory loss, and even a quick jump of 30 seconds can yield six weeks’ worth of amnesia, and sometimes even more. That’s why each drafter is teamed up with an anchor who can help retrieve some of those lost memories. For that, Peri has Jack, her anchor of three years and also her live-in love.

Book Review: The Fifth House Of The Heart By Ben Tripp

The Fifth House of the Heart
Paperback | Kindle
By Ben Tripp
Simon & Schuster | Gallery Books
Release date: July 28, 2015

“When you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you.” – Asmodeus “Sax” Saxon-Tang

Ben Tripp‘s The Fifth House of the Heart is an intelligent new twist on the old vampire myth. It’s common knowledge that vampires are blood-feasting undead repelled by garlic who, while they can be staked to death through the heart and harmed by fire, are basically otherwise immortal. But in this tale, the science behind the supernatural creatures’ existence and vulnerabilities is revealed, while new characteristics are introduced.

Asmodeus Saxon-Tang, better known as “Sax,” is a highly sophisticated, wealthy antiques dealer. The septuagenarian has traveled the globe to acquire his rare treasures, and while it’s apparent that he’s a master in his field, what’s lesser-known is how he came upon some of his rarer acquisitions — by raiding vampire lairs. Because vampires must hide their immortality from the world, it can be difficult for them to maintain ownership of their possessions century after century, leaving these heirlooms free for the taking by a person like Sax. Since vampires typically hoard their valuable possessions — items whose value increases over time — anyone who manages to kill one, would also be able to take the hoard for themselves. Though burglarizing vampire domiciles is not Sax’s specialty, he has done it enough to be set financially for life. But, the undead don’t take too kindly to these trespasses, and with nothing but time on their hands, they can be very patient and wait to take their revenge upon thieves.
