That Spawn reboot no one really asked for is actually assembling quite a cast. For one thing, it already has Jamie Foxxplaying the title character. And it’s got the production backing of Blumhouse.
Now it’s going to add another big name to the cast. New reports confirm Jeremy Renner will be joining the cast as Detective Twitch Williams, the one half of the private investigating duo Sam and Twitch. More on the story below.
At San Diego Comic-Con last summer, we found out that Todd McFarlane was going to direct a low-budget R-rated adaptation of his own comic book creation, Spawn, for Blumhouse Productions.
Now McFarlane has found a star for what will be his feature directorial debut. Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx has signed on to play Al Simmons, a Marine who is double-crossed and killed while working for the CIA, sending him to Hell. While there he makes a deal with an evil being to go back to Earth to see his wife, but ends up being sent back as something completely different, a hellspawn.
For fans of Spawn who have been anxiously awaiting word on a new movie, San Diego Comic-Con brings you a gift.
While hanging out on IMDb’s boat at the convention with Kevin Smith, creator Todd McFarlane had a big announcement: producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions are now developing a dark, R-rated Spawn movie. And because Blumhouse is known for doing things low-budget—with titles including the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Purge movies, and more recently Split and Get Out—McFarlane is going to direct the movie himself.
More below, including videos of McFarlane making the announcement and talking about some other stuff as well.

A movie was made in 1997 starring Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, and Martin Sheen.
The fan film, titled Spawn: The Recall, was created by Michael Paris and runs about seven minutes in length. You can read a synopsis and watch the short film below!
