Rockabilly musician and voice of proudly ignorant Georgia squid Early Cuyler, Unknown Hinson returned to Dragon*Con this year for a performance during the Adult Swim Squidbillies panel.

Hinson, who shaved his iconic sideburns much to the dismay of those in the audience, played a three-song set for the crowd before joining the entire cast of Squidbillies in an unrehearsed reading of a script for a future episode of the show.

While we didn’t record the cast reading, we did manage to get coverage of Hinson’s performance, which we’ve embedded in the three videos below.

Whenever Adult Swim hosts a panel at Dragon*Con, it’s safe to assume they’ve brought their “A” games — and by that I mean those in attendance will get an exclusive performance and most likely will leave laughing their asses off.

Specifically, I’m referring to the team behind Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies, who’s panel opened with show creator and voice actor Dave Willis taking stage to recite a monologue performed by a puppet version of Carl. Soon there after, voice talent Dana Snyder joined with a Master Shake puppet.

The puppets — presumably from the ATHF live action show tour Willis and Snyder did earlier in the year — were actually a genius idea to associate the voices with the characters (since voice actors aren’t always easy to identify).

Geeks of Doom Invades Dragon Con 2009

Until the emergence of Adult Swim‘s Squidbillies, never had there been an animated program that so eloquently embodied the life of an alcoholic talking squid and his illegitimate son in the rural foothills of Georgia.

Such is true of the voice acting for Squidbillies‘s hillbilly squid Early Cuyler, who routinely provides a plethora of thought provoking philosophical quotes such as his dinner table prayer:

“Dear lord… please allow this dangerous combination of hair spray, bat slobber, and D.O.T. four automatic transmission fluid to excite my mind, occupy my spirits, and enrage my body, provoking me to kick any man or woman in the back of the head regardless of what he or she has or has not done unto me.”

Lines of dialog like that can only be delivered effectively by one man, Stuart Daniel Baker a.k.a. the legendary Unknown Hinson. And long before becoming the voice of Early Cuyler, Hinson made a name for himself as a Rockabilly musician who is still touring. His songs are exactly how you’d imagine them to be (ridiculous and offensive). Actually, the amount of ridiculous shit that comes out of this man’s mouth is pretty much exactly like his Squidbillies character.

For proof I’ve provided videos of Unknown Hinson’s performance at the Dragon*Con 2009 Squidbillies panel…

Squidbillies
Vol. 2 DVD
Created by Dave Willis and Jim Fortier
Written by Dave Willis
Turner Home Entertainment
Release date: April 21, 2009

So Adult Swim has come up with some odd cartoons in their time, but I think Squidbillies takes the cake. Squidbillies, created by Dave Willis (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Jim Fortier (Brak Show), follows the story of the Cuyler family, a clan of hillbilly squids that happen to live in a town in Georgia. The Culyers’ penchant for violence and racism are always getting them in trouble but their bacon is usually saved by the town sheriff, thanks to a previous federal law passed that makes them an endangered species.

If you are even a bit familiar with Willis and Fortier’s previous work, you should like this series. The episodes are short and concise, and always really have no continuity whatsoever. Characters from the cartoon are often shot, brunt to a crisp, and eaten in every episode, but show up unscathed later on, sometimes even in the same episode. The storylines are also outrageous and over the top. One of the episodes involves Grandma Cuyler getting into a botched tanning accident and rather than have plastic surgery, the Cuyler family kill various animals and sew the animal skins onto her. Though be warned: A lot of the comedy is broad, with jokes ending with the death or dismemberment of another character, and might not be for all viewers, even for yours truly who happens to like Aqua Teen and Brak.

Dragon*Con 08: Adult Swim Unveils Upcoming Programs [w/Video]

DragonConAt some point during the 22 years Dragon*Con has been in existence, scheduling a panel discussion specifically about Dragons was a main concern for the convention event planner. Yet, lately, they’ve sort of been lacking on the whole “lets talk about dragons for the sake of talking about dragons” area. It seems odd at first to have no such panel about dragons, because the convention has dragon in its name. Then again, there are SO many more cool things to talk about in the present day. Right?

Wrong.

Obviously, you must not have attended Adult Swim’s Dragon panel about Dragons, [adult swim], culture [adult swim], and golf.

Dana Snyder, (voice of Aqua Teen‘s Master Shake, Granny Squid Ruby Jean, and Todd from Codemonkeys) addressed a legion of fanboys and fangirls in dragon-costumed attire — as were other members of the Adult Swim Network for the panel, which was moderated by producer Keith Crofford.

Laughs were had, threats were made, and handicap-lowering tips were shared.

Previews for the next 9-months of ALL-NEW programing were also shown (see videos from the panel here below).
