Hoax Hunters #4 is just like the previous three issues. A good, solid, mystery/horror comic that’s never over the top and never relies on gross-out, over the top violence.

Writers Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley turn up the heat with this issue. There’s a lot of never before revealed mystery of the group’s past, along with the usual fun mystery-solving adventure. This issue, we get to finally delve deeper into the back story of one member of the group, setting up some potentially great story revelations for future issues. Not to be outdone, the main story is a whole lot of fun. It’s a great adventure where we get to see the WHOLE group working together and you get the feeling that for the first time, they’re truly a team. Overall, another great issue from the writing team. It’s got a fantastic last page shocker, that’ll have you waiting for the next issue.

You all now me, whenever it come to horror I run screaming the other way. Basically, I’ve been described as Scooby-Doo on two legs with less hair. So, I went into Hoax Hunters #1 with cautious optimism. I REALLY liked issue #0, and thought, why not? If it gets gory, I can always stop reading it.

Writers Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley have got something REALLY unique here. The basic premise is, a bunch of people investigate strange and odd occurrences, all the while filming it for their reality show, appropriately titled “Hoax Hunters.” What I loved about this book is the character dynamics. You have the gang trying to figure out just what the hell the mystery is in a small town, and why everything’s dying, but at the same time you get what’s going on in their real lives. Look out, Moreci and Seeley! I can already picture someone swiping your premise. The reality show BEHIND the reality show is a great, fresh new concept, and it’s going to be great to see how this plays out. They give us TWO stories every issue – one of the Hoax Hunters trying to find out what’s really going on, and one where the reader is trying to find out what’s really going on with the Hoax Hunters themselves. All combined, this makes for a very entertaining, engrossing comic that you’re not going to want to put down!

There’s a lot to be said about Hoax Hunters. I could easily fall into the comparison trap. You know, the one where the guys in the comic book store says “It’s Buffy meets Scooby-Doo meets Mad Men!”, but I’m not a big fan of that. Things need to be judged and sold on their own merit. That said, this comic does take a few modern day pop culture staples, and turns them on their ears.

Writers Steve Seeley and Michael Moreci have taken something that I normally would gloss over on the comic racks and turned it into something that I can’t wait to read. Without going too deep into spoiler territory, the Hoax Hunters is a group that goes out and investigates, let’s just say, suspicious activities.
