The Master of Horror John Carpenter and wife Sandy King Carpenter started Storm King Comics back in 2015. At this year’s New York Comic-Con this weekend, Storm King took over booth 2304 on the show floor with full displays of their catalogue. They featured their Halloween anthology series John Carpenter’s Tales For a HalloweeNight, which just released Vol. 3, and their new monthly sci-fi series, John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction. Sandy King Carpenter was there along with several writers and artists from the books, one amongst them was James Ninness. He has stories in each of the three HalloweeNight books as well as being the featured author for the first 3-part tale in the sci-fi anthology, an outer space thriller, Vault. Ninness took some time to talk to me about working with Storm King, his process, and what’s next for him.
New York Comic-Con is the perfect place to find new and exciting reading material specifically if you’re into the world of genre fiction. Look no further than booth #2304 on the show floor and meet Storm King Comics. You might recognize the name atop their titles, the Master of Horror, John Carpenter. His wife, producer and collaborator, Sandy King Carpenter is a renaissance woman. Producing John Carpenter films since the 1980s, she is an artist, writer, and the CEO and founder of Storm King Productions. In 2015, Storm King ventured into the world of comics and graphic novels, publishing Asylum which she co-created with John Carpenter and Thomas Ian Griffith. Storm King also created two anthology series; John Carpenter’s Tales For a HalloweeNight which just released its third annual compendium of horror tales, and John Carpenter’s Tales of Science Fiction, which just completed its first story, a 3-part outer space saga, “Vault.” I got a chance to speak with Sandy King Carpenter about the latest releases, her influences, and the future of the brand.

John Carpenter is known as The Master of Horror. His latest venture though brings him back to his roots; a monthly anthology series called Tales of Science Fiction. The series is under the Storm King Comics banner started by Carpenter and his wife Sandy King. The debut story arc is Vault by writer James Ninness with art from Andres Esparza and Sergio Martinez, and lettering by Janice Chiang. It opened with the crew of spaceship Gaia finding a mysterious alien vessel, Vault, and quickly discovering the ship is harboring some kind of alien menace. Soon, the crew is getting picked off and one crew member is going crazy. This week, the final installment of Vault hits stores, and the fate of the four remaining crew members will be decided.

Even though he’s known as the Master of Horror, John Carpenter is a visionary of science fiction as well. With films like Dark Star (1974), The Thing (1982), Starman (1984), and They Live (1987) under his belt, it’s safe to say he knows his way around space, aliens, and outer-worldly beings. Earlier this summer, he began his latest venture in the world of genre with Tales of Science Fiction, a monthly anthology series under the label of Storm King Comics, started by him and his wife Sandy King Carpenter. The first story is Vault, a three-issue space tale about a crew that finds a mysterious ship and encounters horror onboard. Reminiscent of films like Event Horizon and Aliens, author James Ninness introduces a colorful array of characters… and then leads them into certain doom. Issue #1 was released on July 26, 2017, with the second issue in the three-volume series hitting stores this week.
Last Wednesday, Storm King Comics released the first book in their new monthly anthology series, Tales of Science Fiction Vol 1. The series is the brainchild of horror master John Carpenter and his wife and collaborator Sandy King Carpenter who started Storm King Comics several years ago. The first book in the series is “Vault” by writer James Ninness, a space thriller combining elements of Aliens and Event Horizon. The “Vault” story will run three issues before giving way to a new story.
