Fathom Events TCM Classics 2017

If you are bored by the constant stream of sequels and superhero movies, and yearn to see the classics of yesteryear, Fathom Events is there for you. Thanks to the good people at Fathom, 2016 was a great year at the movies for me and my family. I was able to recreate a monumental moment of my childhood, that of my dad taking a 13-year old me to see From Dusk Till Dawn, by taking my 12-year old son Brandon to see the 20th Anniversary showing. We also took in the 20th anniversary of Space Jam, as well as other classics like Planet of the Apes. My wife and I used Fathom Events for date nights, catching several classics throughout the year, like the 40th Anniversary of Taxi Driver and a near Halloween showing of Kubrick’s The Shining.

So what’s on this year’s schedule?

Warner Brothers
Not Rated | 146 Minutes
Original Release Date: June 13th, 1980
Fathom Events Screening: October 23, 2016

October is horror movie month. If you ask horror fans to rank the scariest movies of all time, one movie guaranteed to make almost every list is Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Controversial in his “loose” adaptation of Stephen King’s source material, Kubrick’s film was under-appreciated at the time of its 1980 release, actually procuring two Razzie Award nominations, including one for Kubrick himself. Over time though, The Shining has found its rightful place in horror’s pantheon of greats. This month, Fathom Events, Warner Brothers, and Turner Classic Movies came together to bring The Shining back to movie screens near you for one more day only, Wednesday, October 26th, as part of TCM’s Big Screen Classics series. The first of two days showcasing The Shining was Sunday.

NeverEnding Story Header

The NeverEnding Story
Directed by Wolfgang Petersen
Written by Wolfgang Petersen and Herman Weigel
Starring Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Alan Oppenheimer
Warner Bros. Entertainment
Rated PG | 102 minutes
Release Date: July 20, 1984

Fathom Events and Warner Brothers Entertainment have brought the 1984 classic The NeverEnding Story back to theaters for a special two-day engagement. The first day was Sunday, and my wife and I took our son to watch a movie we both grew up watching with such fond memories. The film is introduced by film critic Ben Lyons, and features a wonderful behind the scenes documentary “Reimagine the NeverEnding Story,” containing interviews with writer/director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, Troy), and members of the cast and crew. The film, made in Germany was auspicious to say the least. This was 1984 and CGI was not around. All the sets, creatures, and characters were done the old school way; puppets, models, miniatures, and blue screen. The movie is based on the novel by Michael Ende, though his name doesn’t make the credits. Ende and Petersen got into a disagreement over the creative process and the author stormed away threatening to halt production, alas to no effect.
