I was born in maybe the greatest year in science fiction film history: 1982, which gave us The Thing, Blade Runner, and E.T. By the time I was five years old, I knew Star Wars, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters. Science Fiction and I go back a long time. How do you define science fiction? Is it robots? Aliens? Giant bugs? How about time travel or visions of the future? It is all this and more and for fans of sci-fi cinema, Sloan De Forest‘s TMC: Must See Sci-Fi: 50 Movies That Are Out of This World is a must-own book.

The Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, is one the greatest filmmakers of all time. One of his classics is the 1959 mystery thriller North By Northwest starring Cary Grant, James Mason, and Oscar winner Eva Marie Saint. The film ranked 55th on the American Film Institute’s 100 years, 100 movies list as well 4th in their list of 100 Thrilling American Films. Debuting in theaters a year after Hitchcock’s classic Vertigo, and a year before he changed the game of horror with Psycho, North By Northwest in unique in the sense, the three years before James Bond burst onto the scene in Dr. No, North By Northwest created the template for the famed spy-hero. Now, thanks to Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events, North By Northwest is in theaters for one more day as part of TCM’s Big Screen Classics series.
If you are bored by the constant stream of sequels and superhero movies, and yearn to see the classics of yesteryear, Fathom Events is there for you. Thanks to the good people at Fathom, 2016 was a great year at the movies for me and my family. I was able to recreate a monumental moment of my childhood, that of my dad taking a 13-year old me to see From Dusk Till Dawn, by taking my 12-year old son Brandon to see the 20th Anniversary showing. We also took in the 20th anniversary of Space Jam, as well as other classics like Planet of the Apes. My wife and I used Fathom Events for date nights, catching several classics throughout the year, like the 40th Anniversary of Taxi Driver and a near Halloween showing of Kubrick’s The Shining.
