Predators
Directed by Nimrod Antal
Starring Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins
Rated R
Release date: July 9, 2010

Predators, the long-awaited second sequel to the 1987 sci-fi/action classic Predator that continued to further Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reputation as the decade’s preeminent action hero and introduced a memorable movie monster in the form of an alien hunter with a grotesque face and a nasty attitude, has a lot to live up to and a whole lot to make up for. It’s the third film in a franchise that was pronounced dead more than a decade ago after the subpar box office of 1990’s Stephen Hopkins-directed, Danny Glover-starring Predator 2 (a movie I really enjoy even though it can’t hold a candle to the original) and was buried even deeper by 20th Century Fox’s lackluster (and that’s putting it kindly) attempt to merge it with its moribund Alien franchise, a concept that worked beautifully in the novels and Dark Horse comic series, but failed miserably on the big screen.

For a while it seemed like the series’ devoted fans would never get the chance to see what a true Predator sequel could be, and that’s where Robert Rodriguez comes in. Back in the mid-1990’s Rodriguez, along with pal and frequent collaborator Quentin Tarantino, was the toast of the independent movie scene after his low-budget directorial debut El Mariachi became a small sensation and showed what a gifted and dedicated filmmaker could do with only a $7,000 budget and an unlimited imagination to make the movie. Hot off the success of El Mariachi, Rodriguez was courted by Fox to help revive the Predator series and Rodriguez wrote a treatment that was ambitious in scope and long rumored to contain roles for both Schwarzenegger and Glover’s characters from the first two films. It was called Predators and the treatment was put back on the shelf as Rodriguez focused on building his filmmaking career.

Must Watch: First Trailer For Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Predators’ Released
  |  @   |

As promised, a trailer for the Robert Rodriguez produced and Nimród Antal directed reboot, Predators, has been unleashed online.

The trailer is pretty awesome and it begins by showing us the group of humans after they’ve first been brought to this mysterious jungle planet. After that, you’ll get to peek at each of the cast and see a lot of tense moments as the humans fight to survive, as well as a few peeks at the vicious Predators who are hunting them. Overall, it’s a very effective trailer; it looks like they nailed the tone of 1987’s Predator while adding some nasty new creatures and a hell of a lot more of them than the one deadly alien from the original film.

Remain in the shadows and cautiously make your way over to the other side to watch the first trailer for Predators!

Geek Peek: Step Onto The Set Of Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Predators’
  |  @   |

A collection of behind the scenes images of the set of the Robert Rodriguez produced and Nimród Antal directed reboot, Predators, have found their way onto the web.

In the images, you’ll see a lot of the cast including Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Oleg Taktarov, Alice Braga, and others. You’ll also get a little peek at some of the Predators themselves, though it must be kept in mind that these are grainy, low-quality images and this isn’t what the elusive creatures will look like when they’re ultra-enhanced with digital texture glory!

Looking at these, I have to assume that maybe it was Mr. Taktarov’s camera? He’s in most of the images you’ll see, and in the ones he isn’t, I found myself wondering if he was behind the lens. Taktarov is a former UFC and mixed martial arts champion who has done a few movies before, like 15 Minutes and Bad Boys II.

Head on over to the other side to check out some of the set images and head over to AvP Galaxy to see many more. Be warned: some of these images may be considered spoiler-worthy, so avoid if that stuff bothers you. Being someone who hates spoilers myself, I wasn’t affected by the images, but your experience may differ.

Gary Ross To Write ‘Venom’; Sam Raimi Hopes To Begin Filming ‘Spider-Man 4’ By March
  |  @   |

The whispers around town indicate that Spider-Man 4 writer Gary Ross is currently in discussions with Sony to write, and maybe even direct their planned spin-off movie, Venom. The movie has already had multiple drafts written, including one from Zombieland writing team Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Ross plans to finish up his scrip for Spidey 4 and then move right into the Venom project. All indications so far is that all things we’ve seen from the character will be thrown away, and that this movie will start all over again — including re-casting the role once filled by Topher Grace in the forgettable Spider-Man 3.

Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Predators’ Puts Faces To Its Group Of Characters
  |  @   |

Not too long ago, word came out that Danny Trejo (Con Air, Desperado) was the first name to be cast in Predators — the new reboot directed by Nimród Antal and produced by Robert Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios. That news was immediately followed up by a script review that filled us in on all of the dirty details, as well as the many cool and exciting characters that we would see battling to survive the vicious creatures in the movie (Read: Script Review Of Robert Rodriguez’s “˜Predators’ Reveals All Kinds Of Juicy Details; Our Dream Cast Shared!). With one swift blow, the majority of the actors who will be filling these excellent roles has now been revealed, and while they are not the part of the fantasy cast we put together, there’s not denying that it’s an interesting group.

The list of names includes Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist, King Kong); Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3, That 70s Show) is currently in negotiations; Alice Braga (City of God, I Am Legend); Mahershalalhashbaz Ali (The 4400, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button); Walt Goggins (The Shield, Shanghai Noon); and former UFC star Oleg Taktarov (Bad Boys 2, 15 Minutes).
