Johnny Depp

There was a lot of excitement when it was reported that Johnny Depp was cast in Wes Anderson‘s The Grand Budapest Hotel. He would have joined Edward Norton, Owen Wilson, Angelina Lansbury, and of course Bill Murray for the film. But Depp’s casting was apparently news to Anderson who states that Depp has not been cast in The Grand Budapest Hotel

Here’s the full quote from Anderson in an interview with the Huffington Post…

Bill Murray

Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom provided lighthearted comedy in summer that was chock-full of action tentpole films. Recently, the director has been courting a variety of names to join him for his new film The Grand Budapest Hotel. Johnny Depp and Jude Law – neither one of them have ever worked with the director – have signed on for unspecified roles. Frequent collaborators Edward Norton and Owen Wilson have been confirmed to have parts in the film as well. Now there is word that Bill Murray – another frequent collaborator of Anderson’s work – and Murder She Wrote star Angela Lansbury will join the cast as well.

In an interview with Vulture, Murray confirmed that he does have a part in the film and that production will take place in Germany. However, the actor did not elaborate on what kind of role he has in the film.

Johnny Depp Joins Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel

If there was one word that could describe director Wes Anderson‘s dream cast wish list for his next project, The Grand Budapest Hotel, it would be ambitious.

The list of names on the cast sheet included Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Jude Law, Jeff Goldblum, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, and Angela Lansbury. Though Murray, Norton, Goldblum, Brody, Wilson, and Dafoe are names that often appear in an Anderson film, this would be the first time for Depp, Law, and Lansbury.

Now it’s being reported that Depp has officially joined the cast of The Grand Budapest Hotel, which is to be set in Europe.

Wes Anderson

Wes Anderson films are great. They feature an ensemble cast that come together for a wonderful film with indie flair. Now with the continuing success of Moonrise Kingdom, Anderson is ready to direct his following film, which has yet to receive a title.

According to sources, Anderson is looking to cast his favorite actors Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Willem DaFoe, Jeff Goldblum, Adrian Brody, and Edward Norton. In addition to his favorite actors, he is also looking to cast Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Angela Lansbury. Quite a collection of names and if everything ends up going according to plan, then this film should be quite the looker.

Moonrise Kingdom: Go-Go Binoculars!

Here’s the thing… I like Wes Anderson, I really do. I think he’s an extremely talented, quirky fellow who makes entertaining, gorgeous cinematic experiences. Unfortunately, I have this sneaking suspicion that instead of being the next Scorsese or Coppola, Anderson could easily become the next Tim Burton – or the hipster, Instagram version of Zack Snyder.

I know, I know – blasphemy, right? Before you set fire to your vintage collection of Kinks records and hurl Criterion Collection DVDs of Rushmore and Bottle Rocket at my face, understand that I enjoy Anderson’s entire filmography (including that brilliant American Express commercial). All I’m saying is, the guy has been constantly criticized for putting style over substance and maybe it’s time we all admit that there’s some truth to that.

I loved Moonrise Kingdom. I think it’s one of the best films of the year – but, at the same time, I experienced a bit of deja vu – like I had seen this movie before. And then I realized I had. I saw it in 2009 when it was called The Fantastic Mr. Fox and before that when it was called The Darjeeling Limited, and so on and so forth.
