Yellow Submarine, the animated, trippy, visually eclectic and highly memorable film which starred The Beatles and is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has been given the graphic novel treatment, and it’s a fun and colorful whimsical ride on paper as much its film counterpart.

Written and illustrated by Bill Morrison, founder of Bongo Comics, well known for its Simpsons adaptations, The Beatles Yellow Submarine takes the best elements of the original cinematic release and adds a vibrancy and clearly long-rooted passion for the intrinsic subject matter.

Blu-ray Review: Magical Mystery Tour

Magical Mystery Tour
Directed by The Beatles
Written by The Beatles
Starring: Paul McCartney, John Lennon,
George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Victor Spinetti, Jessie Robins, Mal Evans
Apple Corps
Not Rated | 52 Minutes
Release Date: October 9th

Magical Mystery Tour, the colorfully wild mess of a film by The Beatles, has been released on Blu-ray and it’s one of the few times in the bands illustrious and innovative career that the term “mixed bag” can be applied when summing up one of their projects.

But suffice to say, Magical Mystery Tour, while an absolutely charming and irresistible piece of delectable eye candy to gaze upon, and even more so now with the spit and polish of the Blu-ray remastering, still ultimately remains nothing more than a curio of The Moptops at their psychedelic peaks, still in the cosmic high of their Sgt. Pepper period, the idyllic peace, love carefree metaphoric lounging on eiderdowns in their native England. It’s a hollow and disjointed piece that has it’s only reliable saving grace in the wonderful soundtrack, which is remastered as well, with the memorable musical strains of The Beatles in all their sonic glory at peak levels.

Blu-ray Review: The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’

Yellow Submarine
Directed by George Dunning
Starring The Beatles
Release date: June 5, 2012

Yellow Submarine, the 1968 animated film starring The Beatles which almost singlehandedly changed the landscape of animation, has recently gotten a release on Blu-Ray and it is nothing short of absolutely incredible.

The film, which was based on the 1966 number one hit by the quartet and also took its narrative cues from albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Rubber Soul, and Revolver, is considered a landmark in animated cinema. Preceded by the very assembly line styles by way of Walt Disney’s factory, Yellow Submarine presented hand-drawn cells and backgrounds in a very different and stunning manner. Utilizing pop art and psychedelic imagery, along with a panache and artistic confidence in which all conventions were splintered, the film has a look of color and style so vivid, it almost makes one forget about the story.

That story consists of The Beatles, in their mustachioed period (save for Paul McCartney) being commissioned by an old salty sea captain, who is helming the Yellow Submarine, to help liberate the people of Pepperland, who were put in bondage by the “Blue Meanies.” Their adventure has run-ins with wild, colorful, eclectic, and surreal characters along the way, all to the electrifying soundtrack of well known and new Beatles songs composed for the film. The Beatles themselves did not have much involvement in the production, save for the music, (even their voices for their animated counterparts were done by voice actors), although they do make a brief but memorable live-action appearance at the end of the film.

The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’ To Be Remastered For New DVD Release

The Beatles 1968 animated classic Yellow Submarine is getting the re-mastering treatment, and will make its way to DVD this May 28, 2012, according to THR.

Instead of going the usual route of computer software to re-master the film, the unanimous choice by Apple Corps (confirmed by them this past Tuesday), was to hand clean the film, frame by frame, preserving the hand-drawn artwork. This process took four months to bring to fruition.

The soundtrack for the film will also be released on May 28th as well, which will also be re-mastered.
