You Won’t Find Jason Bourne Or Matt Damon In Tony Gilroy’s ‘The Bourne Legacy’
  |  @   |

A few days ago we found out that Jason Bourne franchise writer Tony Gilroy would be pulling double-duty as both writer and director for the fourth installment in the series, The Bourne Legacy. The looming concern was whether star Matt Damon would be willing to return to his role despite the fact that second and third chapter director Paul Greengrass wasn’t involved.

The answer is apparently no.

After the initial reports of Gilroy’s involvement, the director wanted to make sure some unclear things became very clear, and one of those things was the Damon/Bourne factor. Gilroy explained in detail that this would be the movie we’ve heard about all along, using the Bourne title but at the same time being a completely original story, not adapted from Robert Ludlum‘s novel. Now we know that in this, a brand new hero will be used, not Jason Bourne, and that it will supposedly paint a much bigger picture to the world we’ve seen expand over the course of the first three movies.

Click on over to the other side to read Gilroy’s plan and explanation.

Here’s the rundown of what Gilroy had to say to Hollywood Elsewhere in an attempt to make sense of where The Bourne Legacy is going:

This is not a reboot or a recast or a prequel. No one’s replacing Matt Damon. There will be a whole new hero, a whole new chapter…this is a stand-alone project.

The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal. Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy…the world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].

Everything you saw in the first three films actually happened, and everyone who got into will be rewarded for paying attention. We’re going to show you the bigger picture, the bigger canvas. When you see what we’re going and see what we’re doing it’ll be pretty obvious….but Jason Bourne’s activities in the first three films is the immediate trigger.

This is where the floor opens up to you fine readers. Is this a very, very bad idea, or is the Bourne franchise in need of some fresh blood and a new story?
