1997’s ‘Titanic’ Breaks China’s Best Opening Record, Passes $2 Billion All-Time
  |  @   |

Director James Cameron‘s mega hit Titanic was released 15 years ago now, but it’s not done being a box office force.

The movie—which would go on to win Best Picture and hold the all-time domestic box office record at $600 million for a long, long time…until Cameron’s Avatar came along, of course—was recently re-released in 3D, and is dumping plenty more coin into the pockets of those who made it.

Since being re-released, the movie has already piled on another $200 million—which is how much it cost to make way back when—to its already massive numbers, pushing it past the $2 billion mark worldwide. Perhaps even more impressive, Titanic is now officially the biggest all-time box office opening in China’s history.

The movie brought in $67 million in its China opening, passing the previous all-time record-holder, Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($56 million).

To put it into perspective, Disney’s recent blockbuster John Carter, which cost over $250 million to make, has only delivered $269 million worldwide.

And speaking of Disney, Titanic‘s $200 million 3D run passes the 3D re-release of The Lion King, which raked in $178 million worldwide.
