How metal is this? Some unknown person(s) recently put up a nine-foot-tall statue of a naked Satan throwing the ubiquitous heavy metal “devil horns” hand gesture in a public park in Vancouver, Canada. As if that wasn’t enough to raise eyebrows, it seems that ol’ Scratch is also, umm, let’s just say “standing at full attention.”
Watch Global News’ coverage of the story here below. Warning, NSFW!
City officials are confounded as to the who, why, and how behind this mystery installation on a pedestal that used to house a statue of Christopher Columbus (speaking of devils, but that’s an issue for another column) in a highly trafficked area. The Columbus statue had been moved to another park ten years ago.
At any rate, it didn’t take long for outraged calls to start pouring in. City officials felt the need to declare the obvious and issued a statement explaining that the piece had not been commissioned by the city. A batch of city workers were promptly dispatched to remove the offending devil and hilarity ensued as they tried desperately to carry the now one-legged Lucifer by anything other than its prominent erect phallus (see video below).
No word on where the city has taken the statue, but one proprietor of an oddities museum is hoping to acquire it for display.
