Disney In Depth: 13 Ways To Add Disney To Your Halloween
  |  @   |

As Jack Skellington’s gang would be chanting, “this is Halloween!” The sensationally silly and spooky holiday nears, and what better way to celebrate this terrifying time of year than by finding ways to incorporate Disney into the mix?

Here are 13 Ways To Add Disney To Your Halloween, all sure to bring about that Oogie Boogie side of you.

1. Watch Hocus Pocus for 13 consecutive days. Well, that may prove a little too challenging, as much as we enjoy quoting the cult classic. But it’s worth a watch each year during the season, especially as part of ABC Family’s annual 13 Nights of Halloween.

2. Perform Disney villain songs on karaoke night. Release that inner Dr. Facilier and tell everyone else at the bar about your “friends on the other side.” Tons of restaurants and bars offer this type of night to embarrass yourself while having loads of fun. Mix it up and take a stab at singing a selection of tunes originally performed by the Disney baddies. My suggestions include “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from The Little Mermaid, “Cruella de Vil” from 101 Dalmatians and, last but not least, “I Put A Spell On You,” as memorably belted out by Bette Midler in – you guessed it – Hocus Pocus! Be sure to thank the person who precedes you on stage for a “marvelous introduction.” Catch this YouTube video by Majestic Entertainment News that shows Midler revisiting her Winifred character during a performance at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

3. Bake Disney Halloween-themed cupcakes. Whether you want to put vanilla frosting on the top and add some black icing to resemble Jack Skellington’s face or develop something even more elaborate, this is the most delectably evil form of recognizing Halloween. Take it up a notch by whipping up strawberry shortcake cupcakes with an edible picture of Lotso from Toy Story 3. Remember how he smells like strawberries? This is a way to honor the sweet-smelling, yet bitter-acting teddy bear. Just don’t load up on the sweets too much, as you have to set aside time to work on other wickedly awesome projects.

4. Bring a bucket of red apples to school or work. No elaboration is necessary. Please ensure, though, that these are not spoiled, because otherwise you might become the evil queen (or king) in your professional environment.

5. Carve a pumpkin to resemble Mickey Mouse. Follow YouTube user Adam Hattan’s tutorial to get your ordinary pumpkin to look like the Disney icon. His easy-to-follow tips can transform just about anyone into a pumpkin-carving expert. Just be sure to pick up some extra pumpkins in case the initial ones you work with end up like messy, rotten vegetables.

6. Play a round of Disney Villains Collectors Edition Monopoly. The signature board game has unimaginable numbers of unique versions. One worth purchasing for the ultimate Disney fan is this one, which has characters as diverse as Pete and Cheshire Cat. Make it an entire Disney night by finishing a villains puzzle or engaging in a devilish game of villains checkers. Yes, that exists, too.

7. Film a spoof of a Disney villain film. The guys over at Honest Trailers did it best with interpreting Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent. Even if you lack the same brilliant narration and editing skills as the Screen Junkies gang, you can still develop something worth showing your friends. Create your spin on Frankenweenie if you are into stop-motion and have lots of clay on hand. Otherwise, film a Lego-themed movie featuring Ultron or a wacky feature involving figurines of Hades and Darth Vader.

8. Decorate your house in Disney style. While nobody can beat the incredibly intricate work of Ricky Brigante of Inside the Magic podcast fame (see video below), you can turn your humble abode into a creepy, Disney-fied paradise. Greet trick-or-treaters with a rousing round of “Grim Grinning Ghosts” in the background. Craft decorations with a Disney touch if you have artistic flair. Create graveyard signs (featuring the names of Disney villains that perished all too soon) that you can stake in your front yard. Wouldn’t everyone want a picture in front of a Gaston tombstone you made?

9. Visit a graveyard while listening to the score from The Haunted Mansion. I guess this idea falls under the “wow, why didn’t I think of that?” category. Pay your respects to the deceased while making the experience more flavorful. With your iPod or iPhone in tow, put your earbuds on and wander around a cemetery or graveyard – respectfully, of course – and immerse yourself in the music by Buddy Baker.

10. See the Sanderson Sisters in person! For the first time (in forever) – sorry to quote Frozen if you cannot get those tunes out of your head – you can catch Winifred, Mary, and Sarah live at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. The witches from Hocus Pocus will run amuck in a show right in front of Cinderella Castle during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. If you cannot physically make the event, head over to YouTube to watch one of the many performances staged so far. Here is one video by YouTuber Inside The Magic.

11. Play Disney villain songs on your favorite instrument. Are you insanely talented on the guitar? How about the violin? Flute? Cello? Whatever your musical knack, countless options exist for interpreting songs by the Disney antagonists. For some inspiration, watch YouTube user Chris-Rigby Piano perform Frollo’s chilling “Hellfire” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame on the piano in this video.

12. Dance to the dastardly Disney ditties. Waltz to “Grim Grinning Ghosts” like the ballroom ghosts of The Haunted Mansion. Swing to “Friends on the Other Side” from The Princess and the Frog. Find a partner, or go at it solo, and identify a Halloween party with some spooky songs. Otherwise, stage your own, include a few Disney ones in the playlist and get everyone moving to the Mouse-inspired music.

13. Design the ultimate Disney mash-up costume. Instead of purchasing a traditional outfit at Party City or even crafting your own version of Jafar, if you have the time and resources, design a “combo costume.” For instance, try making a human version of Scar, like YouTube user Ashlea Henson demonstrates in this video below. How about combining two villains in one costume? Ever wondered what Captain Hook and Ursula’s child would look like? Figure out how to make tentacles for your legs and wear a top akin to Hook. There you have it! The ideas are in your hands, or claws, or hooks.
