Audiobook Preview: Brandon Sanderson’s Calamity (The Reckoners Book 3)
  |  @   |

The good folks at Audible have been kind enough to give us access to the first (almost) fifteen minutes of Brandon Sanderson‘s new Reckoners audiobook, Calamity. The audiobook releases on the same day as the hardcover, February 16, 2016.

You can listen to the 15-minute audiobook preview here below.

I’m a fan of Sanderson’s work, but this is the first time I have been exposed to this young adult fiction series. As I sat here listening to MacLeod Andrews read the story, I was struck by the similarities between the author’s adult fantasy and his teen-oriented stories. Clearly focused and more straightforward, the story draws you in and is without a lot of the nuances with which I am more familiar. Not to say it wasn’t good, far from it. It was merely different.

There the official synopsis from the publisher, Delacorte Press:

“From the best-selling author of the Mistborn series and Words of Radiance comes Calamity, the final book in the New York Times best-selling Reckoners series. What started in the instant number-one New York Times best seller Steelheart and continued in the instant number-one New York Times best seller Firefight now concludes in Calamity.

When Calamity lit up the sky, the Epics were born. David’s fate has been tied to their villainy ever since that historic night. Steelheart killed his father. Firefight stole his heart. And now Regalia has turned his closest ally into a dangerous enemy.

David knew Prof’s secret and kept it even when Prof struggled to control the effects of his Epic powers. But facing Obliteration in Babilar was too much. Once the Reckoners’ leader, Prof has now embraced his Epic destiny. He’s disappeared into those murky shadows of menace Epics are infamous for the world over, and everyone knows there’s no turning back….

But everyone is wrong. Redemption is possible for Epics – Megan proved it. They’re not lost. Not completely. And David is just about crazy enough to face down the most powerful High Epic of all to get his friend back. Or die trying.”

While the short audio preview is certainly not enough to review, it was of great quality, as with all Audible audiobooks. Of course, the fact that the book is written by a Hugo Award-winning author certainly doesn’t damage its credibility! Futuristic but still realistic, this snippet gives me a good idea of the pace of the book. Starting off with an action scene, the story seems solid, quick, and detailed. As a matter of fact, it was just like a scaled down (sentence composition, not length or quality) version of any of Sanderson’s other books. Though, if you aren’t a fan of his work, it’s because you’ve never read any of it. My first exposure to his writing was Elantris, an epic fantasy that sort of rocketed him to stardom within that genre. A short time and several books later, he was helping to finish up Robert Jordan’s Wheel Of Time series after that author’s passing.

In summation, if you have a younger reader in the house, give them the gift of a great story and introduce them to Sanderson’s work here. The Reckoners seems to bridge fantasy and dystopian fiction in a natural and genuine way that will appeal to readers. I will add that if this is your first exposure to the author and his writing, explore this series and then continue with his many other works. It’ll be your pleasure to see just exactly how spectacular fantasy books can be.

Calamity will be available in Hardcover, Kindle Edition, and Audible Audiobook on February 16, 2016.
