I like many others saw the VHS cover of 1988’s Killers Klowns from Outer Space in the video store one day long ago, and just had to see what the hell it was. I was not disappointed. It was every bit as delightfully absurd as I had hoped it would be, and then some.
Back in 2011 we found out that a sequel to the movie, or a “requel,” was on the way in 2012. Seeing as how it’s now 2016, that obviously did not work out. Sad face. But never fear, director Stephen Chiodo says they’re still working on getting the alien clowns to visit us once again, but a new approach is being taken.
“Right now, we are currently pursuing a long arch series for cable. We wondered, should we do a sequel to the first one or do we do a remake? We came up with a “˜requel’ – it’s a sequel and a remake. We’ve been developing this for a while. It’s a trilogy in four parts, and it really follows the continuing adventures of new people who are experiencing this phenomenon of a Klown invasion, and once in a while you see some of the old guys pop up and hear their stories – find out what happened over the last 25 years. It’s fucking great.”
So instead of a new movie they’re aiming for the ever popular option of heading to the small screen. What exactly a “trilogy in four parts” means is unclear. Perhaps it could be a three-part story told over four seasons of a TV series, or maybe it’s a four-part miniseries with the third part being two episodes. The long arch plan likely means something closer to the former.
Other than this quote there’s no word on when we might see this happen. If the delay is money I’m surprised they haven’t gone the crowdfunding route yet; I could certainly see fans of the original throwing some coin towards more Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
