Karen Gillan Joins Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson In ‘Jumanji’

The sequel to, or continuation of, the 1995 adventure film Jumanji has found its female lead.
The film, which currently stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Nick Jonas, has now added Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan, who will reportedly play a key role. More on the story below.
Deadline says there was an extensive search to find an actress who could play the role of Martha before director Jake Kasdan settled on Gillan. Apparently, she beat out some A-list actresses who were also auditioning for the role. Other than that, not much else is known about Martha.
While the film has been described in previous reports as a reboot or remake, Johnson has called the film a continuation of the story that was told in the ’95 movie. The script was written by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner based on a draft penned by original writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.
We will just have to wait and see how much of what Johnson said about the film not being a remake but a continuation is true. With the original film’s biggest star, Robin Williams, passing a few years ago, it should be interesting to see what sorts of connections and elements the new film will make. The original film also starred Kirsten Dunst, David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, Jonathan Hyde, and Bebe Neuwirth.
Gillan has previously starred in Doctor Who and was the lead actress on the short-lived Selfie.
Filming is expected to begin next month in Honolulu, which is an interesting shooting location because of the game’s jungle setting. So while the first film had the game come to life in a town, it could be something else if the players were drawn into the actual game itself. But that is just pure speculation.
Gillan reprises her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which opens next year, and also has a role in James Ponsoldt’s adaptation of Dave Eggers’ The Circle.
Sony will unleash Jumanji in theaters on July 28, 2017.
