Spoilers for American Horror Story: Season 6…
Last week on American Horror Story, the cast was thinned even more. After smashing her husband’s head in a Negan-esque scene, Shelby (Lily Rabe) committed suicide in front of Dominic (Cuba Gooding Jr). Lee (Adina Porter), Audrey (Sarah Paulson), and Monet (Angela Bassett) somehow escaped the Polk family, despite Lee losing an ear and plenty of flesh, and Audrey down a tooth. They murdered Momma and Baby Boy Polk on their way out, unfortunately leaving behind video evidence. Monet was lost in the woods, and when Lee and Audrey get back to the house and find Shelby’s body, they kick Dominic out right into the grasp of Piggy Man and soon, we’re down one more. We know only one person from the spinoff, Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell survives and we’re running out of candidates. Just then Dylan (Wes Bentley) showed up dressed as Piggy Man.
Spoilers for this week’s AHS: Roanoke below.
Just as I say they’re running out of people to kill off, enter three amateur social media stars into the fray. They are fans of the show and just happen to show up with Go-Pro gear, to document their time around the infamous house from “My Roanoke Nightmare.” “Whoa look, episode 3, that’s the tree where they found Flora’s jacket!” This show never ceases to amaze. They see a woman stumbling around bloody, and chase her back to find Diana (Shannon Lucio) dead in the car that crashed in episode 6… whoa. The girl go-pro-er is Taissa Farmiga, an American Horror Story veteran who was a main character in seasons 1 & 3.
Dylan explains he was given explicit instructions from Sidney to show up at this point, since the show would’ve been getting stale. Nope, show is still awesome, but kudos for the preparation. They go after Monet in order to get out of dodge before the final night of the blood moon. Audrey finds Monet, and they’re forced to battle the final Polk boys. This leaves Dylan stabbed and bleeding, and that’s when the torches are seen… The Butcher is on her way.
The go-pro gang, Sophie (Farmiga), Milo (Jon Bass), and Todd (Jacob Artist) explain to police that they were there for their fansite for My Roanoke Nightmare. Their whole interaction with the cops is so meta and hilarious. They, of course, head back to the woods during the “#bloodmoon” because they are trending on Twitter and adding followers. They encounter Lee in the woods and unbeknownst to them, she’s just been acquainted with the witch who fed her a fresh wild pig heart. When Todd gets too close, Lee lashes out and slices his throat. Sophie and Milo find Sidney’s production truck and barricade themselves inside.
They see Lee heading to the house, and decide to risk it to warn the other survivors. By the time they circle around, Lee has impaled Monet by throwing her from atop the stairs. Audrey tries to flee into the bunker but Lee meets her with a cleaver to the shoulder and a boot to the face, sending her crashing and all but dead. Just to make the situation somehow graver, the Roanoke ghosts are here and they disembowel Dylan.
At this point we are given a warning that what we are about to see is graphic and disturbing… NOW… just now we get this! We get the raw recording from the iCloud registered to Todd. The two are dragged into the center of the tribe and ritualistically impaled on stakes and burned alive. They video footage sending out live stream drew the cops finally, albeit way too late. The find Lee alive and apparently post-possession, and Audrey somehow alive having climbed from the bunker. Audrey sees Lee and grabs an officer’s gun, and she gets taken down leaving Lee as the lone survivor… YES! Called it!
On next week’s finale, Lee goes on a Barbara Walters-style TV special. This show continues to one up itself week in week out. This has definitely been the best season from beginning to end since the original, as every single episode contained multiple HOLY SH*T moments, and enough unpleasantness to make you continually turn away from the TV. And the guts it takes to regularly change the focus on the season. 5 episodes of My Roanoke Nightmare, three of Return to Roanoke and now out of nowhere we get an episode revolving around three brand new characters and it somehow all ties in seamlessly. Kudos to the writers and directors and to Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk for knocking this season out of the park so far, and I cannot wait for the finale on Wednesday night at 10:00pm ET on FX.
