The recently released Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of a series of live-action standalone features, not part of the Star Wars “Episodes.” Therefore, the filmmakers decided to leave out the usual opening crawl, an iconic part of all seven previous films, beginning with the original 1977 Star Wars (Episode IV: A New Hope).

Many fans feel an opening crawl is a necessity for a Star Wars film, and in the case of Rogue One, which tells the story of the team of Rebels who stole the plans for the Death Star that led to the events of A New Hope, it would have been helpful to show where this tale fits into the timeline. (Basically, it’s “Episode 3.5.)

Now, a fan has created an opening crawl for Rogue One using an online Star Wars “Intro Creator” tool. Watch the video for it here below.

Andrew Shackley, a writer and reporter based out of northern Los Angeles County, created the crawl using the tool and posted it to Reddit. Of his creation he said: “When I was formulating the crawl, I needed it to do two things. It was important for it to conform to the pulpy style and language of the series, and it needed to contextualize the action we were about to see.”

THR points out that Dan Perri, who created the crawl for the 1977 original, said it was a huge mistake for the filmmakers to exclude an opening crawl for Rogue One, as it is an iconic and expected feature of every Star Wars film. “… the image is so iconic and it’s so important to tens of millions, hundreds of millions of fans,” Perri told THR’s Heat Vision. “I couldn’t imagine it starting without that. It’s foolish.”

The filmmakers, on the other hand, have defended their decision by saying that Rogue One‘s story is actually part of the original 1977 crawl. Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy said back in May that it’s likely that the standalone Anthology installments won’t contain this trademark feature.

Joining Rogue One in the Star Wars Anthology movies will be an untitled Han Solo feature scheduled for May 25, 2018, as well as another untitled film for 2020. In the Han Solo film, Alden Ehrenreich will play a young version of the title character as he’s becoming a smuggler, with Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian and Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke in an unannounced role. The film, directed by Christopher Miller and Phil Lord with a script by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, will also feature Solo’s best friend and co-pilot Chewbecca.
