It’s almost hard to find a “bad” Pixar film. Even their weakest efforts have some very likable qualities, and almost every film is just gorgeous to look at. But when it comes to Coco, the animation studio has really outdone themselves. The latest trailer is full of vibrant colors and emotional musical pieces that really get at the heart of the film’s plot, which follows a young boy named Miguel who, desperate to become an accomplished musician like his idol, finds himself in the land of the dead during Mexico’s celebrated Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead. A love for family and music sing true in what is obviously a love letter to Mexico.

So far, everything we have seen from Coco has impressed me. From the trailers to the footage at the D23 Expo, the film is simply dazzling. It has a deep respect for the Mexcian culture, and that really shows through in the characters (voiced by an all-Latino cast), the music, architecture, and the film’s co-director Adrian Molina.

We won’t get too much into the trailer, but it does go deeper into the film’s plot, which not only reveals his passion for playing music but how far his family has gone to prohibit him from playing it. Despite that, he goes to great lengths to play, and eventually, his desire takes him to the land of the dead. While he connects with his family and finds why his family will not allow him to play music, he discovers that if he stays in the Land of the Dead for too long he will “be stuck there forever.” And it seems fitting that the film uses a cover of The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony.”

There are, of course, humorous elements that are woven into the drama and emotional aspects. But overall, it looks like we can expect to see another great Pixar film, hitting theaters this Thanksgiving.

Coco features the voice talents of Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Jaime Camil, Sofía Espinosa, Luis Valdez, Lombardo Boyar, Edward James Olmos, Alanna Ubach, Selene Luna, Alfonso Arau, Herbert Siguenza, Octavio Solis, Gabriel Iglesias, Cheech Marin, and Blanca Araceli.
