‘House Of Cards’ Will Come To An End After Season 6

Season 5 of Netflix’s political drama, House Of Cards, saw Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) assume the power of the President of the United States when Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) was forced to step down due to a political scandal.

Now it seems like the fantasy is becoming reality. In light of the sexual assault allegations against Spacey, House of Cards will come tumbling down after its sixth season.

Variety says the sixth and final season will debut sometime in 2018, and while the show’s end was inevitable, some are wondering if recent allegations had anything to do with it. Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp told Buzzfeed News that Spacey has sexually assaulted him at a party in 1986 when he was just 14 years old. That would make Spacey 26 at the time. While Spacey “apologized” for his horrendous actions, the actor has been criticized for using this time to come out as gay.

GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis condemned those statements, and said:

“Coming-out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault. This is not a coming-out story about Kevin Spacey, but a story of survivorship by Anthony Rapp and all those who bravely speak out against unwanted sexual advances. The media and public should not gloss over that.”

Clearly, the news is having an effect on the production – as it should. Both Netflix and Media Rights Capital have come out in a joint statement. Here’s what they said:

“Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey. In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.”

In a statement made to The Hollywood Reporter, House of Cards creator and former showrunner Beau Willimon said:

“Anthony Rapp’s story is deeply troubling. During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards, I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behavior on set or off. That said, I take reports of such behavior seriously and this is no exception. I feel for Mr. Rapp and I support his courage.”

Production on the new season is set to begin this month. However, it is not clear how much of a role Spacey will play in season 6 now that there has been a dynamic shift in the narrative. It’s also unclear if anything will change in light of the news. Spacey is an executive producer on the show.
