Swamp Thing Bernie Wrightson

Despite some of the shaky later seasons for Arrow and The Flash, DC television is far superior to its Marvel competitors. New shows like Krypton and Black Lightning may not be connected to the Arrowverse, but they have proven to be huge hits with TV audiences. The comic book company has a number of properties to work with, and they have now announced their latest superhero to get a series treatment. It’s been revealed that a live-action Swamp Thing is in the works.

The series will be coming to DC’s digital streaming service, called DC Universe, and Aquaman director James Wan will be one of the creative figureheads behind the upcoming show. More on the story and an image of the logo below.

Per THR, Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman will write the series and act as showrunners. Meanwhile, Wan will be an executive producer alongside Michael Clear, with Rob Hackett as co-executive producer, all through Wan’s Atomic Monster production company.

Wan called Swamp Thing a “vegetarian hero” on his Twitter account, and revealed that he has been working on the series for some time. He also said that people should expect to see “mood, mystery, gothic romance, and swamp monsters.” That last one makes sense.

There are a few different versions of the character that have been released since the launch of the character. An earlier version of him saw Alec Holland, a scientist working on a bio-regenerative formula, being nearly killed by a jealous rival. But instead of dying Holland became one with the swamp he was working at and walked out of it as Swamp Thing.

Here’s a description of the show from DC:

When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland””only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous””and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

This would not be the first time that Swamp Thing has appeared on a screen. Wes Craven wrote and directed a film based on the character. Released in 1982, the film was a modest hit, which was just enough to release a low-budget sequel. This is also not the only DC property that Wan is working on. The Conjuring director is in post-production on Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa as the title character.

As for DC Universe, that streaming service is expected to launch sometime in 2018. Which means we can expect to see Swamp Thing not too long after.
